ACS Publications partnered with ShanghaiTech University in July 2018 to host ACS Publications Symposium: Innovation in Materials Science in Shanghai, China. This meeting is the fourth in ACS Publications’ innovation series of scientific symposia. The three-day event brought together the top researchers from around the globe to discuss cutting-edge nanomaterials, as well as materials for sectors such as the environment, energy, photon sciences, and biology.

The program featured five plenary sessions on innovations in materials science and a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the “Science Meets Art: C&EN’s Chemistry in Pictures” exhibition. The symposium featured keynote lectures from luminaries such as2014 Nobel Laureate Professor W. E. Moerner of Stanford University, and Lei Jiang, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the dean of the School of Chemistry of Beihang University and a 2017 Humboldt Research Award recipient. Altogether, the symposium featured 19 speakers from around the world, including 12 editors from ACS journals. 180 students and researchers from nine countries were in attendance from across China and countries in Asia, Europe, and North America.

The opening ceremony of the symposium saw remarks given by Dr. Jiang Mianheng, the President of ShanghaiTech University and ACS’s Executive Director and CEO, Dr. Tom Connelly. Both organizations signaled a bright partnership ahead with the exchange of ceremonial gifts.

Professor Peidong Yang, an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, as well as the Founding Dean of ShanghaiTech University, remarked that “this was a great gathering of top scientists working on interdisciplinary materials research with a focus on energy, environment, biology and photon sciences.” As a key member of the symposium organizing committee, he also noted, “There was extensive interaction between the young PIs and potential authors with the ACS editors, it will significantly promote ACS Publications in this growing research community.”

More than a dozen meeting attendees were selected to present their research advances. Exchange of world-class scientific information continued with a poster session complementing the broad topical areas of the symposium. Professor W.E. Moerner stated that he, “was more than happy to help with the student poster prizes.” The poster winners included Liu Jianxi (Northwestern Polytechnical University), Li Yingfeng (Shanghai University of Science and Technology), Gao Xuejiao (Shanghai Jiaotong University), Ren Kefeng (Zhejiang University) and Cui Mengkui (Shanghai University of Science and Technology).

ACS Publications and Chemical & Engineering News, in partnership with ShanghaiTech University, are showcasing a “Chemistry in Pictures” photo exhibition to promote the beauty of chemistry and to leave a lasting impression on the ShanghaiTech campus. The exhibition will remain in place in ShanghaiTech University’s main library until late September. The symposium commemorated the opening of the exhibition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Professor Xiaolin Zhang, University Librarian and Director of ShanghaiTech University Library & Information Services. The ribbon was officially cut jointly by Dr. Connelly and ShanghaiTech University Vice President Dr. Ruxin Li.

“It is our mission and goal to build partnerships with leading academic institutions to broaden the impact of scientific research and demonstrate the power of chemistry on a global stage,” said Dr. Connelly. “What we accomplished with ShanghaiTech University in partnering to host our fourth ACS Publications Symposium, while also opening the C&EN Science Meets Art: Chemistry in Pictures Special Exhibition is a perfect representation of that goal.”

Registration is now open for the next event in the innovation symposia series. ACS Publications, in partnership with Peking University and Tsinghua University, will host Innovation at the Frontier of Chemistry and Life Science in Beijing, China from December 2-4, 2018. Register today!
