Announcing ACS Omega: The Last Word in Rapid, Objective Publication

Hold on to your lab glasses — ACS is unveiling something big.

This week, ACS announces the creation of ACS Omega, a new open-access, multidisciplinary journal publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research from around the world. We made the big announcement in Hawaii at Pacifichem, an international chemistry conference.

ACS Omega will be a home for original research covering all areas of chemistry, chemical engineering, and allied scientific fields. But it’s different from other ACS journals. Here are three things you need to know:

  1. It’s global. ACS has received an increasing number of submissions from China, India, and Korea, and ACS Omega will help meet the needs of those markets. The journal will be led by four co-editors, based in China, India, Europe, and the Americas. Editors will also draw on a geographically diverse editorial board of active scientists.
  1. It’s “mega.” Like other so-called “megajournals,” ACS Omega will publish articles on the basis of rigorous technical review, rather than subjective opinions of a paper’s significance or impact. ACS currently publishes more than 40,000 peer-reviewed articles annually across all of its journals. But tens of thousands of manuscripts are declined. Megajournals allow communities to decide for themselves which papers are most “important.” And authors benefit from rapid editorial decisions, swift publication, and immediate availability of their work.
    The journal will integrate with a new manuscript transfer system, which will allow authors submitting to one ACS journal to be easily referred for review and publication in another suitable ACS journal if their paper is not initially accepted.
  1. It’s open. ACS Omega is the latest chapter in ACS’ growing open access program, joining sister publication ACS Central Science and other initiatives including ACS Author Rewards, ACS Editors’ Choice, and ACS AuthorChoice. It will satisfy open access mandates from a range of funders, and will set article publishing charges competitive with other open access journals that feature objective peer review.

ACS Omega will begin accepting research submissions in the spring of 2016 and will publish its first articles online that summer. For chemists around the world, summer can’t come soon enough.

Pacifichem 2015: Connecting Chemistry with Society

Pacifichem celebrates the coming together of the chemical societies of far-flung nations, and in so doing, their cultures as well.  It is only fitting, then, that in the Pacifichem venue they will discuss the role that chemistry plays in society as a whole. Whether it is supplying the new clean energy sources we need to protect the planet or producing ever better drugs needed to treat neglected diseases and to ebb the tide of antibiotic and chemotherapeutic resistance, novel approaches to chemistry are crucial for every aspect of society. To echo the talks in the “Connecting Chemistry to Society” technical symposium to be held at Pacifichem, ACS Publications is providing a collection of papers that herald the myriad ways in which chemistry affects our lives and culture.

Pacifichem 2015: Chemistry of Clean Energy Conversion, Storage, and Production

Every five years the International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies (Pacifichem) becomes the pre-eminent forum for scientists from around the globe to discuss cutting-edge developments in all areas of chemistry. The theme for this year’s conference in Honolulu, Hawaii is Chemical Networking: Building Bridges Across the Pacific, with an emphasis on the collaborative nature of chemistry as a multidisciplinary science and the aim to promote networking with pan-Pacific research groups. The Chemistry of Clean Energy Conversion, Storage, and Production sessions this year will showcase chemists and engineers tackling the world’s energy issues through myriad approaches. The symposia will cover everything from carbon dioxide utilization, heterogeneous catalysts for bio-refining and light harvesting surfaces to microwave green chemistry, fuel cells, hydrogen storage and water splitting, among many others. In this context, we are proud to highlight the groundbreaking work of ACS Publications authors who will be speakers in the sessions. These scientists are pushing boundaries, in order to address the challenges of clean energy conversion, storage and production.

Pacifichem 2015: Bench to Bedside

Chemistry plays a central role in the advancement of modern medicine. Although chemistry has long been the foundation for the discovery and development of therapeutics, its contributions to the fight against disease are continually expanding. From research on nutraceuticals and functional foods that provides a foundation of knowledge for the promotion of health and reduction of risk for chronic diseases, to the development of nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery and molecular imaging, chemistry’s reach affects the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

To supplement the exciting presentations in the “Bench to Bedside: Chemistry of Health Care” technical symposium to be held at PACIFICHEM, ACS Publications has assembled a collection of articles that highlight the diverse contributions of chemistry to health care. Pacifichem 2015: Biological Chemistry

Biological chemistry is an amalgamation of the chemical and life sciences. It is the study of the chemistry of living organisms at the cellular and molecular level, and is vital to the understanding of these living organisms. Applications are diverse and range from pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and cancer research, to agriculture. Pacifichem 2015: Agrochemistry, Environmental, and Geochemistry

The fields of agricultural chemistry, environmental chemistry, and geochemistry address challenges in areas including alternative energy, green chemistry and sustainability, biomass, remediation, and human health. As a primer to the exciting research that will be presented at Pacifichem, we’ve compiled a collection of articles, from across the ACS portfolio, that highlights the broad scope of issues affecting these fields. The publications describe advances in understanding potential contributors to acute water toxicity in oil sands process-affected water, the effectiveness of ferric chloride to pretreat biomass, the need to carefully analyze lignin fractions and classify them based on desired physical and chemical attributes, the influence of macromolecular structure on the hydrolytic stability of ascorbic acid supported in pectin films, and the discovery that pectin nanostructure can be altered through enzymatic engineering to produce tailored structural and functional properties. Pacifichem 2015: Macromolecular Chemistry

Macromolecular science is a highly interdisciplinary field drawing from many areas of research that involve the synthesis, processing, properties and applications of polymers. Polymers form the basis of many everyday materials such as plastics, fibers, films, rubber, paints, and adhesives, and impact crucial aspects of life such as healthcare and medicine, energy, and the environment. Given the significant role of polymer chemistry in our lives, Pacifichem 2015 will hold several dedicated ‘Macromolecular’ thematic sessions.  We showcase here a compilation of recent articles published in relevant journals of the American Chemical Society, and authored by speakers and session organizers of the Macromolecular symposia at Pacifichem.

In line with this year’s theme, this collection highlights the collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of polymer science. These articles cover work in new synthetic routes, nanotechnology, deriving materials from renewable resources, and development of novel polymeric materials with a plethora of applications such as therapeutics, bioimaging, photonics, batteries and energy storage, and bio-based manufacturing. Through this themed collection we highlight impactful and most recent advances by polymer scientists with promise for future discoveries and developments.
