Chuan He Named Editor-In-Chief of ACS Chemical Biology

ACS Publications is pleased to announce Professor Chuan He’s appointment as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of ACS Chemical Biology, replacing founding EIC Professor Laura L. Kiessling. He is the John T. Wilson distinguished service professor in the departments of chemistry and of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Chicago. His research group studies a broad range of topics in chemical biology, nucleic acid chemistry and biology, epigenetics, and genomics. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the American Chemical Society Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, and the ACS Chemical Biology Lectureship Award, among many other awards.

“Since its inception, ACS Chemical Biology has established itself as the main platform for chemical biologists to communicate their research and share scientific discoveries,” says He. “I envision the journal expanding its scope to encompass emerging research areas that are likely to blossom in the coming decade. I also look forward to building relationships with young chemical biologists through new initiatives, and I believe that the journal can play an active role in encouraging all chemical biologists to explore new areas of research.”

What is your vision for ACS Chemical Biology as Editor-in-Chief?

Under the leadership of former Editor-in-Chief Professor Laura Kiessling, ACS Chemical Biology has become a platform that glues the chemical biology community and serves everyone. It is the first chemical biology journal run by academic chemical biologists. Its main goal is not to make a profit but to serve the research community of chemical biology. I will strengthen the journal’s role in serving everyone, especially to ensure that we can help young chemical biologists develop their careers. We also care about scientific impact and encourage researchers to submit the latest findings and cutting-edge research ideas to ACS Chemical Biology. I believe many of us are tired of the lengthy revision process after submission, so our editorial team will keep the process of publishing papers as short and streamlined as possible while maintaining high standards.

What are your expectations for submissions to ACS Chemical Biology?

I think there are generally three types of submissions: can be a development of a new method, a new scientific discovery, or the accumulation of data that is valuable to the research community. We welcome different types of submissions, including research resources type work. We plan to have a new mechanism for junior chemical biologists to summarize the scientific significance and breakthroughs of their research.

Can you tell us about your current research?

I started my independent lab working on bioinorganic chemistry, microbiology, and structural biology in the first 6-8 years. Over the past 13 years, my lab has focused more on RNA biology, epigenetics, and genomics. We study nucleic acid chemistry and biology and also use chemical principles to invent new genomics methods. Over the past decade, my lab has been more focused on answering biological questions, but we have recently embarked on several new research directions in chemical biology, and we hope to report results from these new directions in the future.

How did you determine this research direction? What is your advice for choosing a research direction?

For me, there are three criteria for choosing a research direction: first, whether it has great scientific significance; second, whether the pathway has notable in vivo functions or phenotypes; third, whether I can bring in unique ideas or invent methods to help address the challenges.

What advice would you give to young scientists for their career development?

I would suggest going beyond research areas you are familiar with. Have the courage to get into real biology and try to start a new research direction every 5 to 10 years. Consider attending biology conferences like Keystone meetings, and don’t just stay in your familiar field and attend only familiar meetings. As a chemical biologist, your success will be judged by your contribution to biology or the truly useful chemical biology approach you have developed.

Get to Know ES&T Award Winner Menachem Elimelech

Professor Menachem Elimelech was recently named one of the winners of the Outstanding Achievements in Environmental Science & Technology Award from Environmental Science & Technology. Professor Elimelech is the Sterling Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University, where his research focuses on membrane-based processes for energy-efficient desalination and wastewater reuse. He also researches sustainable production of water and energy generation with engineered osmosis, environmental applications and implications of nanomaterials, and water and sanitation in developing countries.

What does this award mean to you?

I am grateful that ACS and the editors have recognized the importance of our work on membrane-based technologies for desalination, water reuse, and brine management. Credit goes to my current and former graduate students and postdocs for their contributions.

What have been some of the key influences that have shaped how your career has developed?

The realization about two decades ago that water scarcity is a serious global problem and that climate change exacerbates water scarcity has inspired me to work on membrane technologies as a means to augment water supply by utilizing non-conventional water sources such as seawater and wastewaters. I believe that seawater and brackish water desalination and wastewater reuse, when used appropriately, can be sustainable methods for augmenting water supply in water-scarce regions.

What do you consider some of the most important highlights from your career so far?

This is a tough question to answer. I am proud of the many graduate students and postdocs that I mentored who are now quite successful in their careers. I am also proud of the environmental engineering program at Yale University, which I founded over two decades ago. The program has graduated outstanding individuals who are working relentlessly to solve our environmental challenges. I am also happy that our papers help to set the research agenda in membrane-based desalination and water purification and steered the membrane community to relevant research topics that have a direct impact on industry and humanity.

Describe your current area of research (or areas of interest).

My current research is in the general area of membrane-based technologies at the water-energy nexus. Specifically, we are working on membrane-based processes for energy-efficient desalination and wastewater reuse, advanced materials for next-generation environmental separation and water decontamination technologies, and fundamental mechanisms of selective ion separations in membrane systems. In recent years, we have also worked on the development of technologies for the management of brines from inland desalination plants and industrial wastewaters, such as those produced in the oil and gas industry. Specifically, we proposed the use of ultrahigh-pressure reverse osmosis (UHPRO) as a technology to displace energy-intensive thermal evaporators that are commonly used for brine management. More recently, we have developed a new membrane-based technology for concentrating brines, referred to as low salt rejection reverse osmosis (LSRRO).

What motivates you to be a researcher in this field of environmental science & technology?

I always wanted to work on topics related to water, maybe because I grew up in southern Israel, a semi-arid region that receives less than five inches of rain annually. Water is our most precious resource, and I am excited to work on technologies to ensure adequate and safe water globally.

What are the major challenges in this area, and what type of work can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?

Considering the accelerated adverse impacts of climate change on water resources, one of the major challenges will be to augment freshwater supply using unconventional water sources. Industrial wastewaters represent a major source of unconventional water that can be reused to extract fresh water and minimize discharge to the environment. For the reuse of industrial wastewaters, there is a need to develop energy-efficient membrane-based technologies that can achieve high water recovery and produce fresh water at a low cost. There is also a need to investigate the potential of resource recovery from the concentrated brines generated during the reuse of these industrial wastewaters.

What is your advice for young investigators?

I would encourage young researchers to find the right balance to work on fundamental research but also on relevant research that may help humanity. This may be challenging because our university tenure system and prestigious journals are biased toward “hot” topics rather than applied and relevant research. I also encourage young investigators to focus their research on one or two thrusts initially and make an impact before expanding their research later in their careers. Lastly, researchers should enjoy their research and mentoring and inspire their students to be inquisitive and happy in what they are doing. A happy and inspiring work environment will lead to creative research.

ACS Nano Welcomes Professor Xiaodong Chen as New Editor-in-Chief

ACS Publications is delighted to introduce Xiaodong Chen, Ph.D., as the new Editor-in-Chief of ACS Nano.

Professor Chen is the President’s Chair Professor in Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Medicine by courtesy, at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He holds a joint appointment as the scientific director and principal scientist at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, Agency for Science, Technology and Research. Chen serves on the editorial advisory boards of more than 10 journals including ACS Nano, ACS Applied Bio Materials, and Advanced Materials, and is an Associate Editor of ACS Materials Letters. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Münster in Germany.

ACS Nano is renowned in the nanoscience and nanotechnology research community, and as editor-in-chief, I will be interested in how the journal can itself display the impact that nanoscience and nanotechnology research has on society,” says Chen. “The research described in ACS Nano has the potential to transform pressing issues facing society, helping to provide solutions to unmet challenges in sustainability, healthcare, and security. What initially attracted you to your field?

By specializing in chemistry and materials science, I can pursue the limitless potential of creating positive impacts of nanoscience and nanotechnology in sustainability development, healthcare, advanced manufacturing industries, and more.

This field can complement other interdisciplinary academic fields such as electrical engineering, bioengineering, and data science to advance fundamental research and resolve real-world issues with solutions beyond the scope of a single research discipline.

What are you most excited about as you begin work with ACS Nano?

ACS Nano has come a long way to become a global-leading journal that publishes papers of high quality and significance in all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology and its esteemed recognition by the research community for its perceived fairness, speed, and distinctive touch. I am excited to begin work with ACS Nano and have the privilege to lead this publication, and I hope to live up to the expectation entrusted to me.

It is most exhilarating to join ACS Nano and connect the dots while extending our global reach with community engagement of leading experts to discuss new research and promote collaboration for applied contributions of nanoscience and nanotechnology, striving to meet the pace and pressing demands for our future.

What do you think are the major challenges facing nanoscience and nanotechnology today?

Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that directly relates to chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, physics, bioengineering, and chemical engineering to shape a range of disciplines that evaluate material properties at the nano-level. In this era of scientific and technological boom, nanotechnology is one of the sophisticated technologies that created a series of technological advances. Without a doubt, there are some challenges regarding its applications.

Major challenges of nanoscience and nanotechnology persist today when researchers attempt to control or manipulate the matter on an atomic scale to direct them to the target application and the inability to predict the results of changing molecules/materials which may imply the emergence of the potentially undesirable outcome. Thus, this technology is also experiencing some difficulties due to fear and controversy, fearing its impact on the future.

What do you think is the most interesting and/or important unsolved problem in your field?

The most crucial unsolved problem we are facing today is improving our health and well-being. Especially in the face of unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and population aging that put great emphasis on new drug/vaccine creation and innovative engineering techniques to deliver healthcare for quality living.

In the same line of thought, the most crucial unsolved problem in my field would be how to extend the quality of life by scaling digital health innovation. We have already seen that as the average age increases, neurodegenerative diseases are also on the rise and heavier chronic disease burdens. Living a healthy life for as long as possible outweighs the importance of simply living longer. By exploring technological tools and data in precision healthcare, we could support processes that underpin life. Such include delivering innovative solutions with enhanced sensory capabilities that benefit digital healthcare applications, including robotics, wearables for continuous health monitoring, advanced prosthetics, sensation restoration, impression construction, psychodiagnostic, nanotherapeutics, etc.

With my group, we are developing soft and adhesive materials for implementing conformal bioelectronic interfaces in skin-like sensors. This area enables the further extension of biological senses and reconstruction of “new senses” (or restoration) by fusing conformal sensing technology with artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing, which performs brain-like perception of the obtained high-quality data. I hope my technological inventions can one day empower digital healthcare, environmental sensing, and extend/mimic human senses for the next-generation intelligent systems for robotics and neuroprosthetics.

What advice would you give people who want to pursue a career in science? If you had to start over again, what advice would you give yourself?

The road to a successful career in science can be challenging. Scientists and researchers using science to create something new may produce novel materials with no previously known characteristics that can unlock many areas in front of humans to uncover materials or technology that can contribute to the development and service of humanity. Besides cultivating a keen and innovative mind, one needs to build resilience to overcome challenges to be adaptable to the ever-changing demands of this field.

If to start over again, I would advise myself to keep pushing the boundaries of the emerging scientific field to create a positive impact by continuously deploying technologies into real-world applications that potentially derive solutions to global challenges.

Call for Papers: Third Special Issue on Software Tools and Resources

The Journal of Proteome Research is preparing to publish its Third Biennial Special Issue on Software Tools and Resources in January 2023.

Software tools and data resources are essential to research in all omics domains, including proteomics and metabolomics. The goal of this recurring special issue is to highlight the latest novel and significantly updated software tools, web applications, and databases scientists can use for data analysis and visualization in proteomics and related research.

For readers, this provides an easily identifiable source of tools specifically reviewed for their applicability and ease of adoption. For authors, this provides increased visibility and wider adoption of their tools within the proteomics community through dissemination and documentation.

For inclusion in this special issue, authors must present either a complete description of a relevant novel tool, library, web application, or database (article) or a substantial and meaningful update of a previously published tool or resource (technical note). Tools with a graphical or web browser interface are preferred, but the editors will also consider well-documented web service APIs or libraries of functional building blocks for custom data analysis pipelines.
