The inaugural Editor-in-Chief for ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and the AMI family of journals, Dr. Kirk Schanze, will complete 15 years of service at the end of 2023.

ACS Applied Material & Interfaces, launched in 2009, has grown into an ACS Applied Materials portfolio of eight journals. This rapid growth extends to the number of published articles, frequency of publication, and impact of the research reported in the articles across the journals. Journals in the ACS Applied Materials portfolio include some of the top-rated materials journals in the field, representing authors and readers from across the globe.

Seeking a new leader

ACS Publications is looking for a new leader with a strategic vision who, along with Deputy Editors, can construct the next chapter for these eight ACS Publications journals.

The selection of Editors of each of ACS Publications’ 80+ journals is a considered process. It begins with the formation of a diverse, experienced, and knowledgeable search committee who are tasked with identifying leading candidates from around the globe.

Candidates are thoroughly discussed and vetted before a finalist emerges. As with each ACS journal, the ACS Board of Directors approves the nomination to complete the search.

Qualities of Effective Editors

ACS Editors-in-Chief are active, accomplished researchers within the international scientific community served by the journal. They have the scientific insight to know where the field is going and to assemble and lead a team of Associate and Deputy Editors representing the scientific and demographic distribution of the field.

The Editor-in-Chief of the ACS Applied Materials suite of journals is responsible for appointing Deputy Editors to the journals and working closely with them to define the journal scopes and to raise awareness and impact of each publication. The Editor-in-Chief is ultimately responsible for the review, selection, and publication of manuscripts submitted to ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief, along with the Deputy Editors, is responsible for identifying top researchers across all disciplines of materials science and working proactively to bring timely contributions from those researchers into the journal.

The Editor-in-Chief must hold themselves to the highest ethical standards in research and publication. They should use their time efficiently to ensure that manuscripts are processed in a timely manner while receiving a thorough and fair evaluation.
