What you will learn

Students will face the problem whether choosing to work in a company when they graduate, but because they have been in the university environment, there is a lot of confusion about the working environment of the company, such as:

  1. Enterprise R&D is different from university R&D.
  2. What is the research model of a researcher in a corporate? How to initiate projects, obtain project funds, management and assessment?
  3. The qualification requirement of a researcher in the corporate. Can academic qualifications (such as doctoral and master’s degrees) have a real impact on job and job content? Does the company value work experience or education?
  4. The requirements of the company for non-scientific research capabilities. If college graduate students want to enter the enterprise to do research work, in addition to strong research capabilities, which skills will be added?
  5. What is the research environment of the company? Compared with colleges and universities, what is the research environment and resources normally, e.g. advanced experimental equipment?
  6. Compared with colleges and universities, what are the differences in corporate culture?
  7. Career ladder for R&D positions in enterprises.
  8. The key points for assessing candidates in enterprise’s recruiting procedure.

Dr. Chen Hongyu was elected as ACS Fellow in 2018. ACS Fellow is a high honor established by the American Chemical Society to recognize members’ great achievements in science and profession and their important contributions in supporting the work of ACS. ACS Fellows follow the nomination and selection system, and usually only dozens of scientists are elected each year. In 2018, ACS selected 51 Fellows, of whom only three experts came from China.

陈红宇博士2018年当选ACS Fellow. ACS Fellows 是美国化学会所设立的极高荣誉,用于认可和表彰会员在科学和专业方面所取得的巨大成就,以及在支持学会工作中所做出的重要贡献。ACS Fellows 遵循提名推选制,通常每年只有几十位科学家当选。2018年ACS 共评选出51位Fellow, 其中只有三位专家来自中国。

Dr. Hongyu Chen is currently Dow Fellow, Dow Asia Pacific Chief Researcher, Dow Asia Pacific Scientists Committee Chairman, Chairman of Dow Core Research and Development Scientists Advisory Committee, and also a member of Dow Asia Pacific Research and Development Leadership Team.

陈红宇(Hongyu Chen)博士, 现任陶氏Fellow,陶氏亚太区首席研究员,陶氏亚太区科学家委员会主席,陶氏核心研发科学家咨询委员会主席, 同时也是陶氏亚太区研发领导团队的成员。

Dr. Chen Hongyu received his Ph.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University in 2000; he joined Dow Chemical in 2001, and returned to China in 2007 to devote himself to the establishment of Dow Chemical Shanghai Research and Development Center. Dr. Chen Hongyu led forming several technical platforms of Dow Chemistry Asia-Pacific R&D Center. He was the main developer of Dow Chemistry Asia-Pacific material R&D strategy. He successfully led Dow Chemistry to cooperate with domestic universities, important strategic customers and domestic and foreign government agencies in scientific research and technology. Dr. Chen Hongyu was visiting professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2008, a part-time professor at Queensland University in Australia and Fudan University in 2012, a visiting professor at Zhejiang University in 2015 and a visiting professor at Nanjing University of Technology in 2016.

陈红宇博士于2000年从美国凯斯西储大学(Case Western Reserve University)大分子系获得博士学位,于2001年加入美国陶氏化学工作,并于2007回国投身于陶氏化学上海研发中心的建设。陈红宇博士领导建设了陶氏化学亚太研发中心的若干技术平台,是陶氏化学亚太材料研发策略的主要制定者,并成功领导促成了陶氏化学与国内高校、重要战略客户及国内外政府机构的科研技术合作。陈红宇博士于2008年受聘成为北京化工大学兼职教授,2012年受聘成为澳大利亚昆士兰大学和复旦大学的兼职教授,2015年受聘成为浙江大学的兼职教授,2016年受聘成为南京工业大学的兼职教授。

Dr. Chen Hongyu is mainly engaged in the research and development of macromolecule materials. He has made great achievements in the basic fields such as the relationship between the structure and properties of macromolecule, the viscoelasticity of macromolecule and the blends of macromolecule, especially in the structure and properties of oriented macromolecule. At the same time, Dr. Chen Hongyu developed and commercialized elastic fiber and elastic foam based on polyolefin block copolymer, high voltage cable special material based on polyolefin copolymer, epoxy resin and curing agent with ultra-low dielectric constant and dielectric loss, and epoxide powder coating for high frequency circuit boards, which brought direct and great value to the company and society. In recent years, Dr. Chen Hongyu has published more than 60 papers in European and American authoritative polymer journals and conferences, including Progress in Polymer Science, Polymer Reviews, Macromolecules, Polymer, Journal of Polymer Science. Dr. Chen Hongyu has applied for more than 100 American patents.

陈红宇博士目前主要从事高分子材料的研究和开发,对高分子结构和性能关系、高分子粘弹性、高分子共混物等基础领域的研究颇有建树,尤其是在取向高分子结构和性能方面的研究取得了令人瞩目的成果。同时,陈红宇博士开发并商业化了基于聚烯烃嵌段共聚物的弹性纤维、弹性泡沫,基于聚烯烃共聚物的高压电缆专用料,高频电路板专用的具有超低介电常数和介电损耗的环氧树脂和固化剂,环氧粉沫涂料等等,为公司和社会带来了直接的巨大价值。近年来,陈红宇博士在包括Progress in Polymer Science、Polymer Reviews、Macromolecules、Polymer、Journal of Polymer Science等欧美权威高分子期刊和会议上发表论文60余篇,陈红宇博士共已申请100余项美国专利。

Dr. Chen Hongyu has won a series of awards and honors for his outstanding contribution. During his Ph.D. study, he won the Beyer Distinguished Research Award of the Department of Macromolecule, Case Western Reserve University, and Dow’s highest honor for his great contribution to the company, including the Asia-Pacific Innovation Award and the Asia-Pacific Core Research and Innovation Gold Award. Dr. Chen Hongyu was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2013 for his outstanding contribution to polymer physics; Dr. Chen Hongyu was awarded the Shanghai International Science and Technology Cooperation Award in 2015; Dr. Chen Hongyu has participated in the leadership of the Shanghai International Chapter of the American Chemical Society since 2014 and served as its chairman from 2016 to 2017.

陈红宇博士因其卓越的贡献荣获了一系列的嘉奖及荣誉。就读博士期间,获得了凯斯西储大学大分子系最高荣誉拜耳杰出研究奖;因为对公司的长足贡献多次获得陶氏的最高荣誉,包括亚太区创新奖,亚太区核心研发创新金奖。因对高分子物理的杰出贡献,陈红宇博士在2013年当选为享有很高声誉的美国物理学会的Fellow;陈红宇博士2015年荣获上海市国际科技合作奖;陈红宇博士自2014年开始参与美国化学会上海国际分会领导事务,并于2016-2017年担任分会主席。
