The newly-released 2017 Journal Citation Reports® from Clarivate Analytics show ACS journals continue to be the most-cited and most-impactful publications in their fields, including the six core chemistry categories. ACS journal articles were cited more than 3.1 million times in 2017, an increase of 8% compared with the previous year. The median Impact Factor for an ACS journal is 4.70. Almost half of ACS journals covered by Clarivate’s analysis have an Impact Factor of 5 or higher, and 90% of ACS journals have an Impact Factor higher than 3.
Some of the more notable results include:
- The Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) recorded its highest-ever Impact Factor at 14.357 and again ranks ahead of two other leading chemistry society publications, both Wiley’s Angewandte Chemie International Edition and the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemical Science. JACS continues to be the most-cited journal in chemistry, tallying more than half-a-million citations in 2017, up almost 4% from 2016.
- ACS Central Science, the Society’s award-winning, fully open access journal achieved a notable Impact Factor of 11.228 in 2017, up by 41% over the prior year.
- Chemical Reviews achieved its highest-ever Impact Factor at 52.613, up 10%, and ranked at number 4 out of the approximately 12,000 total scientific periodicals covered by the 2017 JCR. Chemical Reviews publishes comprehensive, authoritative and critical reviews of important developments across all traditional, as well as emerging, areas of chemistry worldwide. Chemical Reviews and Accounts of Chemical Research (20.955), another preeminent ACS journal that features thought-provoking perspectives on discoveries in the chemical sciences, serve as invaluable research and education resources, in keeping with the Society’s scholarly mission.
Of the 52 ACS journals with JCR rankings, more than 80% achieved Impact Factors that put them in the quarter of their topical categories. Many journals earned their highest-ever Impact Factors in 2017. In addition to those journals mentioned above, those highly ranked within their cohorts include:

In 2017, two ACS journals became eligible for partial Impact Factors, illustrating the value ACS adds to research in new and emerging fields of science. ACS Energy Letters achieved a remarkable partial Impact Factor of 12.277, the highest entry Impact Factor achieved by an ACS journal, highlighting the broad appeal of its editorial coverage of alternative energy capture, conversion, and storage. ACS Sensors attained a first-time partial Impact Factor of 5.711, underscoring its swift recognition as a preferred forum for innovative sensors research.
A number of measures demonstrate that ACS journals continue to be the most-influential in chemistry. The portfolio of journals saw their total articles published increase 8% over 2016, with 45,000 articles published last year. ACS journals also set a new record in 2017 with more than 100 million full-text downloads.
