On August 8, 2018, Professors Paul S. Weiss and Jillian M. Buriak led a panel discussion on the topic of “Choosing Scientific Problems and the Resulting Papers” during the KAIST International MSE Workshop 2018: “Big Ideas in Emerging Materials.” Weiss and Buriak were there in their roles as Editors-in-Chief of ACS Nano and Chemistry of Materials, respectively.

The KAIST International MSE Workshop is intended to provide an interesting forum for students, scientists, and engineers to share latest breakthroughs and big achievements in materials development and physical/chemical characterization with unique properties and functionality.

“I was very pleased to host distinguished scholars from world’s top universities and Editors-in-Chief from leading academic journals such as Nature Materials (Dr. Vincent Dusastre), ACS Nano (Professor Paul Weiss), and Chemistry of Materials (Professor Jillian Buriak). This workshop inspired KAIST faculty members and students to have big ideas on materials innovations. It is surely a very special event for KAIST,” said Workshop Chair Il-Doo Kim.

“I want this workshop to serve as an opportunity to better understand each other among editors, scholars, and students. Editors will have better scope to understand what we are doing to make the world better, and our students and faculty will gain a better understanding of how big ideas must get noticed to have a real impact. In addition, Paul and Jillian led an open discussion on choosing scientific problems and the resulting papers. KAIST graduate students really enjoyed the discussion,” Kim added.

“It was clear that the students and faculty really appreciated the opportunity to chat in such a frank and open manner. I was so impressed with these students as they were shy at first, but then showed themselves to be gutsy, quietly confident, and smart as heck,” said Professor Buriak.

“We were delighted to have another superb workshop at KAIST. The developments over the last two years have been impressive and the engagement of the students this year was particularly notable, at the symposium, during the breaks, and at our ACS Publications panel discussion,” said Professor Weiss.
