ACS on Campus Goes Off-Campus for the Indian Research Community

At ACS Publications, we believe that our ‘New Normal’ can enable ‘New Possibilities.’ That is why ACS on Campus, our flagship outreach program, returned to India with a virtual event for the Indian research community on August 10, 2020.

ACS Publications was overwhelmed by the Indian community response, with 3900+ registrations for the webinar and 1700+ researchers participating in the live event. Attendees even made the event trend on social media with the hashtag #AttendingACSOffCampus. The ACS Publications team is grateful for such a positive response from the Indian research community and is committed to continuing to deliver useful researcher engagement programs.

The scholarly publishing environment is changing rapidly, and ACS Publications understands that conventional in-person customer engagement can jeopardize researchers’ safety. That is why we transformed ACS on Campus into a virtual event for an Indian audience. We did not restrict the opportunity to the researchers of a particular institution but instead made the event open to India’s entire research community.

The digital event’s topic was “Peer Review & Publishing Ethics.” This subject aligns well with the needs of Indian researchers during these tough times. The research process can be complicated, especially for an early career researcher. Young researchers need expert advice and access to the right tools to conduct research, collaborate with others, present their work impeccably, and see it published in a well-respected journal.

During this 2-hour virtual event, our experts helped the Indian research community understand the peer-review process’s nuances.

The event covered the following topics:

  • “Publishing Ethics,” Led by Langmuir Editor-in-Chief, Professor Gilbert Walker. Professor Walker is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Toronto. He is the Associate Scientific Director of Nanomedicine Innovation Network and the Chief Technical Officer of Sylleta Inc.
  • “Peer Review Processes: Why, How To & What Not to Do,” led by The Journal of Physical Chemistry Editor-in-Chief, Professor Joan Emma Shea. Professor Shea is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
  • “Essential Skills for a Successful Career,” led by Chemical & Engineering News Editorial Advisory Board Member Dr. Anubhav Saxena.Dr. Saxena is the R&D President at Pidilite Industries. He is also on the Editorial Advisory Board of ACS Omega.

The speakers enjoyed answering the questions from the excited and curious young members of the Indian research community. These young researchers engaged in discussions on the latest technology, publishing advice, career insights, and current challenges in science with the speakers.

Read what some of the participants had to say:

“It was an extremely well-organized event. Distinguished speakers like Professor Joan-Emma Shea and Professor Gilbert Walker talked about publishing protocols and ethics. Dr. Anubhav Saxena explained the value of skill assessment and discussed the early career opportunities that are very relevant, considering the present global situation. The session topics were carefully crafted, diverse, and self-explanatory. The webinar hosted by Mr. Manish Uniyal and Mr. Piyush Kumar Gupta deserves a big thumbs up. Thank you, #ACSOffcampus for enlightening us with your resources in this current pandemic scenario.”

Pritam Roy, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Nanotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati

“I found this webinar very useful to get myself updated with present peer review processes and publication ethics. All the speakers presented their talk very effectively. I will send my next research article to ACS journals for publication. Thanks to organizers for this very informative and useful webinar.

Dr. Dheeraj Mandloi, Assistant Professor in Chemistry, Institute of Engineering and Technology Devi Ahilya University
