The next Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) will be Professor Erick Carreira of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zürich). Professor Carreira will formally assume the JACS editorship at the beginning of January 2021 from Professor Peter Stang, who has led the journal since 2002.
Professor Carreira currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Organic Letters, a position he took on in 2019, after 18 years as an Associate Editor for the journal. His appointment as Editor-in-Chief of JACS follows an extensive public search that saw over 100 nominations from across the chemistry community.
In addition to his work as an Editor, Professor Carreira is a professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, as well as a member of the Competence Center for Systems Physiology and Metabolic Diseases, at ETH Zürich, where he has taught since 1998. A self-described “generalist,” Professor Carreira’s current research focuses on a variety of multidisciplinary fields, including natural products total synthesis, synthetic methods, and catalysis to prepare molecules with asymmetric bond construction. He is co-founder of three start-up companies and has been involved in the development of several chemistry education software tools.
Professor Carreira is a member of both the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He’s been a member of the American Chemical Society for 37 years and has received numerous awards from the society, including the 2013 ACS Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
Professor Carreira brings a compelling vision to JACS, including a commitment to global representation. To support the strategic development of the journal, Professor Carreira has identified and appointed six new executive editors. In addition to being eminent scientists, the executive editors represent the diversity of chemistry in research and background.
January 2021 update: Following the end of previous contractual obligations, JACS is pleased to announce the journal’s sixth Executive Editor:
Jihong Yu
Jihong Yu is a world-renowned expert in inorganic synthesis, nanoscience, and solid state chemistry. She is an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of TWAS, Foreign Member of Academia Europaea, and the recipient of IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering (2017). She was the Associate Editor of Chemical Science (2012-2020) and joined JACS as an Executive Editor in 2021.
Meet the Executive Editors of JACS
Joseph S. Francisco
Joeseph Francisco brings a long and distinguished career in atmospheric chemistry and computational techniques to the journal. A former Sloane and Guggenheim Fellow, Professor Francisco was the President of the American Chemical Society in 2010. He joined JACS in 2019 as an Associate Editor.
Zhaomin Hou
Zhaomin Hou has spent his career at RIKEN, beginning as a research scientist and steadily being promoted, most recently to Deputy Director of the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science in 2013. Dr. Hou’s research explores new catalysts for key reactions, including the transformation of atmospheric CO2 and N2 into value-add chemicals.
Kai Johnsson
Kai Johnsson is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, Department of Chemical Biology, since 2017 and Professor at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His current research interests focus on the development of chemical approaches to visualize and manipulate biochemical activities in living cells. His past achievements include the introduction of methods to specifically label proteins in living cells (i.e. SNAP-tag and CLIP-tag), the development of new fluorescent probes and sensors as well as studies on the mechanism of action of drugs and drug candidates. He has been an associate editor with ACS Chemical Biology since 2005 and joins JACS in 2021.
Melanie Sanford
Melanie Sanford is a world-renowned expert in catalysis, organic synthesis, and organometallic chemistry. She was a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2011 and has received a number of international awards, most recently the ACS Award in Organometallic Chemistry (2021) and the RSC Catalysis in Organic Chemistry Prize (2020). She joined JACS as an Associate Editor in 2014.
Karen Wooley
Karen Wooley is a polymer chemist with a particular focus on degradable polymers and complex polymer assemblies. She has received many awards over her career, including the Royal Society of Chemistry Centenary Prize and the ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry. Karen joined JACS in 2014 as an Associate Editor.
