ACS Publications is excited to announce Professor Zijian Guo, Ph.D., as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Biomedical Imaging (CBMI), a new partner journal between Nanjing University and the American Chemical Society. Professor Guo is the Changjiang Professor at Nanjing University, and founder and Director of the Chemistry and Biomedicine Innovation Center (ChemBIC). He was elected as a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
We connected with Professor Guo recently to learn more about him, his area of research, and his hopes for the future of Chemical & Biomedical Imaging and this exciting area of chemistry. Read on to find out more.
What does it mean to you to be the Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Biomedical Imaging?
Over the last few decades, new imaging technologies, such as super resolution imaging, electrochemical microscopy, and magnetic resonance imaging, have advanced the field of disease diagnosis. Chemical & Biomedical Imaging is perfectly placed at the interface of chemistry to be the perfect place for cutting-edge research on imaging to be published. I am looking forward to taking this journal from strength to strength in collaboration with my Editorial Board colleagues. I am excited and honored to be the journal’s inaugural Editor-in-Chief.
How important is it for you to be supported as Editor-in-Chief by your fellow Editors?
As a new journal looking to publish papers of the highest quality and significance, CBMI is supported by a truly international Editorial Board, made up of leading scientists with expertise in a range of areas including imaging probes, single-molecule imaging, bioimaging and clinical imaging. Their support will ensure we can provide expert services and advise to our authors who are publishing their work with us.
What are your goals for Chemical & Biomedical Imaging over the coming year?
The journal is now accepting submissions, so I am excited to read the work our authors have begun to put forward for consideration. I am looking forward to showcasing the journal to the wider chemistry community and celebrating the publication of the journal’s first issue in Spring 2023. I want CBMI to be the key open access journal for chemical and biomedical imaging research, so encouraging and commissioning submissions for the journal will be a key focus in 2023, along with highlighting the impactful papers that we publish.
Why is Chemical & Biomedical Imaging open access?
Chemical & Biomedical Imaging is open access to allow everyone to be able to read the work we publish, wherever they are in the world. It allows scientists to come together to build on one another’s work and to disseminate research across the globe, meaning more people are able to read your research whilst also having the added benefit of raising awareness of the work CBMI publishes, which, as a new journal, is also very important.
What excites you about the field of chemical and biomedical imaging?
I am excited about developments in the field of imaging probes, which provide a clearer picture of biological processes, and new imaging technologies that will push the limits of what we can do with chemical, spatial and temporal resolutions—potentially leading to new breakthroughs in basic research and clinical diagnosis.
Where do you see developments in chemical and biomedical imaging going in the next decade?
I think key developments will include new chemical imaging technologies, which will allow us to gain more insight into detailed chemical structures; new biomedical imaging probes and technologies which will allow us to visualize essential biomolecules, metal ions and biological processes in an intact living organism—or even a human body. I also think new, highly sensitive imaging methods will be developed, able to detect the biomarkers for early diagnosis of disease.
How do you see the journal and the community working together to address challenges and seize opportunities in the field?
Chemical & Biomedical Imaging will provide a platform for the publication of the most cutting-edge, and innovative research in imaging across all areas of chemistry—physics, biology, engineering, medicine, life science, and more. The journal is the perfect home for any researcher looking to publish their imaging research open access, to allow their work to be shared as widely as possible and read by as many people as possible.
What advice would you give to young scientists working in the field today?
My advice to young scientists today would be to do your research with passion, dignity, uniqueness, and independence. But also, don’t be afraid to seek advice or discuss challenges in your research with advisors or well-established researchers in your field.
As Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Biomedical Imaging, what are you looking for in a paper?
I am looking for papers that showcase innovations in molecular and biomedical imaging, demonstrate advances in the development of new chemical probes and methodologies for biomedical applications. I’m also interested in research that pushes the limits of chemical, spatial and temporal resolution at single molecule, single particle, or single cell level.
Why should researchers submit their next manuscript to Chemical & Biomedical Imaging?
Chemical & Biomedical Imaging is a peer-reviewed open access journal devoted to the publication of cutting-edge research papers on all aspects of chemical and biomedical imaging. As an open access journal, papers published in the journal will benefit from a global readership and CBMI’s international Editorial Board are dedicated to ensuring that all work submitted to CBMI will have the same robust, efficient, and rigorous peer review as all ACS journals, to ensure the work published is of the highest quality.
For the first year, Nanjing University and ACS Publications have agreed to waive APC payments for all authors whose manuscripts are accepted into Chemical & Biomedical Imaging following robust peer review.
