The Journal of Physical Chemistry A Invites You to Submit to the Upcoming ‘Attosecond Chemistry’ Virtual Special Issue

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A will publish a Virtual Special Issue (VSI) on “Attosecond Chemistry.” The Guest Editors encourage researchers to submit their new and unpublished work by June 30, 2023.

GUEST EDITORS

  • Fernando Martín, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
  • Louis DiMauro, The Ohio State University
  • Caterina Vozzi, Istituto di Fotonica e Nanotecnologie (CNR-IFN)
  • Francesca Calegari, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)
  • Kiyoshi Ueda, Tohoku University

Research areas of particular interest include:

  • Attosecond science
  • Ultrafast processes
  • Ultrashort laser pulses
  • Electron and nuclear dynamics
  • Free electron lasers
  • Theoretical chemistry on short timescales
  • Ultrafast spectroscopy
  • High harmonic generation

In conceiving this VSI, the Guest Editors were inspired by some recent exciting innovations and discoveries, including:

  • Attosecond science has given access to the natural time scale of electronic motion. This has opened new ways of doing chemistry, since the way molecules behave, e.g., forming or breaking bonds, is ultimately dictated by electronic motion, which paves the way for nuclear motion.
  • High-harmonic generation sources and X-ray free electron lasers can now routinely generate light pulses of sub-femtosecond duration, thus providing access to the attosecond time scale.
  • Since the first observation in 2010 of attosecond electron dynamics in molecular hydrogen, increasingly complex molecular systems have been under scrutiny, leading to the birth of attosecond chemistry (also called attochemistry).
  • Physical chemistry, and chemistry in general, can greatly benefit from these developments, because new, unforeseen possibilities to control chemical reactions may arise in the future.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

The review process for all submissions for this VSI will be handled by The Journal of Physical Chemistry A Senior Editors.

To ensure an unbiased peer-review process, the journal asks that you do not indicate within your manuscript that the submission is intended for the VSI. If you do, your manuscript will be returned for correction. Instead, when you submit your manuscript, please indicate this on your cover letter and note what part and section you feel will be the best fit. You can find a complete list of sections and other important information for authors in the The Journal of Physical Chemistry A Author Guidelines.

As with all submissions to The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, your manuscript should represent a rigorous scientific report of original research, as it will be peer-reviewed as a regular article. Manuscripts are expected to provide new physical insight and/or present new theoretical or experimental methods of broad interest.

CONTRIBUTE TO THIS VIRTUAL SPECIAL ISSUE

If you are unsure if your research is within the VSI’s scope or have other questions about submitting a manuscript to this VSI, please email The Journal of Physical Chemistry A Deputy Editor T. Daniel Crawford’s office at crawford-office@jpc.acs.org.
