Professor Michael J. MacCoss, of the University of Washington School of Medicine, will lead the journal starting on January 1, 2027.

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) is pleased to announce that Professor Michael J. MacCoss of the University of Washington School of Medicine, USA, has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Proteome Research (JPR).

Journal of Proteome Research is a monthly, peer-reviewed journal reporting on global protein analysis and function. The emphasis of the journal is on a multidisciplinary approach to the life sciences through the synergy between the different types of “omics”.

“We are delighted to welcome Professor MacCoss as the next Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Proteome Research,” said ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer Sarah Tegen, Ph.D. “His contributions to quantitative proteomics, commitment to open and reproducible science, and collaborative vision make him exceptionally well suited to lead the journal. We look forward to working with him to strengthen the journal’s role as a leading resource for the proteomics and metabolomics communities.”

Professor MacCoss will begin his tenure as Editor-in-Chief on January 1, 2027, building on the success and leadership of Professor John R. Yates III, who has led the journal since 2016.

“I am pleased that ACS Publications has selected Professor MacCoss as the next Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Proteome Research," said Professor John R. Yates III. "He brings broad research expertise to the journal leadership position and has made lasting contributions to the software and methods the field depends on. I am confident that Professor MacCoss will be an excellent steward of the journal and will keep it on its current strong trajectory.”

Professor MacCoss is a professor of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a pioneer in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. He has made foundational contributions to quantitative methodologies, including targeted proteomics and data-independent acquisition (DIA) to improve the rigor and reproducibility of protein measurements.

Recognizing computational infrastructure as a critical bottleneck in the field, Professor MacCoss’s laboratory has developed and contributed to widely adopted software tools for proteomics and mass spectrometry, including Skyline, Panorama, Percolator, Comet, and ProteoWizard.

“For more than two decades, Journal of Proteome Research has stood where technical innovation meets biological insight, serving as a key venue where our field shares its discoveries and pushes scientific standards forward. Stepping into this role after John Yates is an immense privilege,” said Professor MacCoss.

His focus on computation, community building, and collaboration will continue in his new role:

“I hope to make JPR an outward-facing hub: the journal for pioneering methods, computational tools, and biological discoveries, while aggressively expanding our reach into clinical and translational medicine,” said Professor MacCoss. “Crucially, the journal must be welcoming to researchers outside our discipline and provide a knowledge base for the next generation of proteomics and metabolomics scientists.”
“We want JPR to be where cell biologists, clinician-scientists, and early-career researchers alike turn for field-defining perspectives, tutorials, and reproducible protocols that make complex -omics technologies accessible and actionable for any laboratory. The scientific goals will be anchored by an author-first review experience that is fast, constructive, and respectful of the reviewers who make our community possible.”

Professor MacCoss holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Vermont. His honors include the ASMS Biemann Medal, the HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the US HUPO Donald F. Hunt Distinguished Contribution Award.
