This Special Issue will highlight recent advances in various aspects of natural product signaling. Submit your manuscript by October 31, 2025.

Looking up through a dense forest canopy, trees intertwine against a gradient purple and blue background.

Natural compounds play myriad roles in biology as signaling molecules that influence development, communication, and defense across life. As the field of natural products undergoes a post-genomic renaissance, recent investigations and discoveries – from the micro to the macro – are forging a new understanding of how natural small molecules play a big role in signaling within organisms and systems.

The Journal of Natural Products is opening submissions for a Special Issue on “Natural Product Signals—from Microbiomes to the Environment”. The goal of this Special Issue is to highlight the latest advances and challenges in this field.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Host-microbe communication
  • Small molecule-mediated cellular development
  • Microbiome
  • Interkingdom chemical modulation
  • Plant-insect interaction
  • Marine animal-algal networks
