Fornasiero is a professor at the University of Trieste in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was named an Associate Editor of ACS Catalysis in February 2015. Combining expertise in material science and heterogeneous catalysis, his research focuses on technological solutions to energy and environmental problems, such as the design of innovative materials for catalytic converters, the development of catalysts for the reduction of nitrogen oxides under oxidizing conditions, the combustion of diesel particulate, and the design of photocatalysts for both environmental remediation and sustainable hydrogen production.
The award, which is only given every four years, is named for Heinz Heinemann, a pioneer of catalysis research who developed 14 commercial processes and received 75 patents, primarily in catalysis and petroleum chemistry, during a 60-year career. Past recipients of the award include Professor Graham Hutchings, of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute and Professor James A. Dumesic of University of Wisconsin – Madison.
