Linic is a professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He was named an Associate Editor of ACS Catalysis in September 2014 and previously served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal since the journal’s inception. His research contributions include revealing the mechanism by which plasmon-driven catalysis can introduce energy into chemically reacting systems to achieve lower temperature operation and higher selectivity to desired products. This culminated in his demonstration that plasmonic nanoparticles of Cu exhibit superior selectivity in direct catalytic epoxidation of propylene to form propylene oxide when illuminated with low intensity visible light. His combination of experimental and theoretical approaches also helped unlock the molecular mechanism of ethylene epoxidation on silver, leading to his demonstration that the shape of silver nanoparticles (controlled though nanoscale synthesis) can be used to tune the selectivity of olefin epoxidation catalysts. He has also advanced the field of electrocatalysis via successful model-driven design of novel alloy catalysts for electrochemical oxygen reduction and hydrocarbon oxidation reactions.
The Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis recognizes an individual’s contributions to the field of catalysis, particularly in discovering and understanding catalytic phenomena, proposing catalytic reaction mechanisms, and identifying and describing catalytic sites and species. The Emmett Award is given once every two years. Past recipients of this award include ACS Catalysis Editor-in-Chief Christopher W. Jones of Georgia Institute of Technology and Editorial Advisory Board Members Robert J. Davis of the University of Virginia and Manos Mavrikakis of University of Wisconsin – Madison.
