Laura L. Kiessling, Editor-in-Chief of ACS Chemical Biology, Director, Keck Center for Chemical Genomics, Laurens Anderson Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Steenbock Professor of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin, Madison, was recently elected to the American Philosophical Society (APS).
“I was completely surprised to be elected to the American Philosophical Society! There are amazing chemists among the members, and also thought leaders from so many other areas of scholarship—artists, justices, economists, and presidents. It is humbling for me to be elected to this eminent group,” said Professor Kiessling upon receiving the news.
The American Philosophical Society promotes useful knowledge in the sciences and humanities through excellence in scholarly research, professional meetings, publications, library resources, and community outreach. As the first American learned society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, the APS has played an important role in American cultural and intellectual life for over 250 years.
The membership of the APS includes eminent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. Membership in the APS is entirely honorary and reflects extraordinary accomplishments in all fields of intellectual endeavor.
Professor Kiessling added, “This opportunity to interact with such creative thinkers is an incredible gift.”
Professor Kiessling and other newly elected members, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, will be recognized and officially inducted into the Society at a special ceremony during the biannual APS meeting in November 2017.
