This Special Issue will commemorate 50 years of the Peng–Robinson equation of state. Submit your manuscript by March 31, 2027.

The Peng–Robinson equation of state has become an essential tool for predicting fluid properties and phase behavior in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, and process simulation. Fifty years after its publication in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry: Fundamentals, continued theoretical and computational advances are extending its application to increasingly complex systems.
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research invites submissions for “The Peng–Robinson Equation of State at 50: Advances, Applications, and Future Directions.” Connected with the 50th Anniversary Symposium at the University of Alberta on October 16, 2026, this Special Issue will highlight the equation’s impact, recent advances, and future directions in thermodynamic modeling.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Theoretical developments and modifications of the Peng–Robinson equation
- Advanced mixing rules and thermodynamic frameworks
- Phase-equilibrium and multiphase-equilibrium calculations
- Applications to petroleum, natural gas, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and aqueous systems
- Modeling of complex fluids, electrolytes, polymers, and associating mixtures
- Uncertainty analysis, parameter estimation, and numerical algorithms
- Integration of equations of state with molecular simulation, machine learning, and process simulation
- Emerging challenges and future directions in equation-of-state modeling
Contributions are welcomed from participants in the anniversary symposium as well as from the broader thermodynamics and chemical engineering communities.
