The Good, the Bad, and the Uncertain: Public Perception of the Chemical Enterprise

Much of the convenience and comfort of our modern lives is down to advances in chemistry. Yet with those advances come setbacks and uncertainty, tainting the science in the eyes of the public. Mark Jones from Dow discusses public perceptions of the chemical enterprise, including why some have a negative view of chemistry and what can be done to advance the science without causing harm. This third installment in the 2017 Industrial Science Series will look ahead to the future of chemistry and industry.

Cystic Fibrosis: Discovery of CFTR Modulators

Cystic fibrosis is the result of malfunctions in a single protein, known as CFTR. As such, CFTR is an excellent target for developing drugs. Peter Grootenhuis of Vertex Pharmaceuticals will discuss approaches to developing small molecule modulators of CFTR, which can improve function in cystic fibrosis patients. This is the fourth installment in the 2017 Drug Design and Delivery Series, which highlights efforts by chemists to combat the diseases that plague us.
