On April 14, 2009, the first paper exploring photoelectrochemical properties of metal-halide perovskites in a liquid-junction solar cell was published in Journal of the American Chemical Society by Kojima, Miyasaka, and their colleagues. In just 10 years, research into perovskite photovoltaics has seen phenomenal growth as it energized energy researchers around the world.

The editorial teams of ACS Energy Letters and seven other ACS Publications journals are excited to celebrate milestones in the development of perovskite photovoltaics, originally reported in their journals. They’re reflecting on this decade of fast-moving research on a fascinating and important topic with a collection of stories and progress made.

“The unprecedented popularity of the field, seen through the exponential rise of published papers as well as citations during the last ten-year period, shows the major impact of the discipline in the broader scientific world,” writes ACS Energy Letters Senior Editor Filippo De Angelis in his April 15, 2019, Editorial on the subject. “More than 10,000 papers published during 2009-2018 have garnered nearly 400,000 citations. Of these, 1,069 papers have been identified as Highly Cited papers by Web of Science, having garnered more than 260,000 citations.”
