On Feb. 20, 2017, at the age of 86, Mildred S. Dresselhaus, a solid-state physicist, materials scientist, and longtime advocate for women in science, passed away.
Dresselhaus is best known for her scientific work on condensed matter and the atomic properties of carbon, which prompted a journalist to give her the nickname “Queen of Carbon Science” more than 30 years ago.
To celebrate and honor Mildred Dresselhaus’ incredibly productive research career in the area of nanoscience and materials, nine ACS journals have compiled a virtual issue of 30 of her publications, as well as other articles about and with her. While representing a tiny fraction of her contributions to scientific knowledge, these publications capture the enormous breadth of her interests in materials, and remember this extraordinary modest and iconic scientist who dedicated her life to her passion, and gave so much of her energy, imagination, and intellect to the scientific community.
