The research on new pollutants has attracted tremendous worldwide efforts in the scientific community of environmental chemistry and environmental health sciences and governments due to the emerging concerns and riskiness on human health. A series of environmental pollutants have been reported probably as new pollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), phthalate esters (PAEs), short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), bisphenol A and alternatives (BPAs), neonicotinoid pesticides, chlorine disinfection byproducts, antibiotics, microplastics, nanomaterials, etc.

Substantial progresses have been made on the understanding of environmental occurrences, exposures and toxicities, as well as on the development of innovative technologies for pollution control and remediation of new pollutants. This Virtual Special Issue from Environment & Health aims to provide a forum encouraging interdisciplinary discussion and information exchange between environmental scientists from different parts of the world. The journal welcomes research articles, review articles, perspectives and viewpoints in, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • New principles and methods for analysis of new pollutants
  • Identification and nontarget analysis of new pollutants
  • Multipath exposure and bioavailability of new pollutants
  • Metabolomics and exposomics of new pollutants
  • Environmental risk assessment and control strategies of new pollutants
  • Epidemiological advances and health impacts of new pollutants
