In 2019, air pollution contributed to over 6 million deaths worldwide. Evidence is mounting that air pollution can cause harm at much lower levels than previously thought. In addition, major new mobility trends in urban transport are unfolding globally causing potential health effects related to traffic air pollution.
This Special Issue call for papers from Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) invites research contributions on the latest multidisciplinary advances on urban air quality, its sources, its chemistry and microbiology, health impacts and disease implications, solutions for mitigation and control, and research outcomes influencing policy change. The editors particularly welcome submissions focusing on the following topics:
- Energy infrastructure, climate change, and urban air quality
- Air pollution and public health
- Aerosol chemistry, microbiology, and airborne pathogens
- High-resolution air pollution mapping and modeling
- Local and regional meteorology and urban air quality
- Understanding sources and behavior of local and regional urban air pollution
- Traffic-related air pollution impacts
- High-, middle- and low-income approaches to air quality mitigations and solutions
- Key air quality research trends towards policy change
As a cross-cutting theme, technical articles in the above areas that consider dimensions of equity and environmental justice are both welcome and encouraged.
