Chemistry plays a key role in improving food production, protecting crops, and promoting sustainable practices to eliminate world hunger. Explore noteworthy research highlighting chemistry’s impact in supporting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food security.

ACS Publications is elevating chemistry research to drive progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) through special Showcases, hosted by Kudos. These Showcases simplify and share scientific breakthroughs, making the impact of chemistry more visible and accessible. Stay tuned as we feature additional SDG Showcases highlighting how chemistry is advancing global sustainable development.
Chemistry plays a vital role in addressing hunger worldwide. It enhances food production through high-yield seeds and improved fertilization, protects crops from pests and disease, extends shelf life via better packaging, and promotes food safety. Innovations in fortified foods help fight malnutrition, while sustainable solutions like ammonia synthesis, phosphate recycling, and precision crop protection strengthen food security for future generations.
This Showcase highlights research aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, featuring articles that examine innovative strategies, advanced practices, and emerging technologies aimed at fostering sustainable agriculture.

About the ACS Publications SDG Showcases
In 2024, ACS Publications joined the SDG Knowledge Cooperative, an initiative that unites publishers to improve access to and understanding of research that supports global sustainable development. The initiative is led by Kudos—a platform that helps researchers communicate their work through accessible storytelling—and aims to enhance the visibility and impact of SDG-aligned research.
We have selected seven SDGs of particular importance to the chemistry community, which serve as focal points across dedicated Showcase pages. Each Showcase features high-impact articles from ACS journals that contribute to the advancement of the SDGs. These articles have been curated and summarized to foster deeper understanding and extend the reach of the science to audiences beyond academia, including industry leaders, educators, policymakers, and the media.
