Environmental health is one of the largest and most paramount areas of research focus, as it directly impacts the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. Still, many environmental health challenges continue to persist around the world: according to the World Health Organization, nearly 14 million global deaths (almost 1 in 4) in 2016 were linked to risks associated with unhealthy environmental conditions.
Access to clean drinking water is still a struggle for millions; air quality and pollution is a major global concern, leading to approximately 7 million deaths each year; and global warming continues to pose significant health risks for many populations, particularly those in low-resource areas. And to combat these global challenges, there remains an imperative need for the sharing of research and information across all areas of scientific and scholarly publishing.
ACS Publications recently joined the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Publishers Compact as part of our commitment to global sustainability and the continuous dissemination of cutting-edge environmental research. Many journals across our diverse portfolio stand at the forefront of sustainable discovery and innovation in environmental health, publishing leading-edge discoveries in numerous areas of research and driving progress toward a healthier planet.
In observation of World Environment Day 2023, we invite you to read a curated selection of noteworthy ACS journal articles that are helping to shape a healthier environment and future for each of us.
