This Special Issue will discuss chemical safety practices in Higher Education Institutions’ laboratories operating in countries that have little to no regulations geared toward small-scale chemical users. Submit your manuscript by August 31, 2025.

Some countries in the world do not have national regulations that address chemical laboratory safety, yet there are researchers dedicated to improving practices in their universities and countries. The absence of regulations for small-scale chemical use can be seen as an obstacle to developing and implementing chemical safety programs. This Special Issue will discuss chemical safety practices and encourages the discussion of how these safety practices align with the corresponding national regulations as well as the challenges that range from governance to operations in Higher Education Institutions.

There are diverse “actors” involved in scientific research and teaching in Higher Education Institution laboratories. The author perspectives welcome to contribute include, but are not limited to:

  • Principal investigators
  • Research staff
  • Research administrators
  • Laboratory technicians
  • Students

While regulations can help define safety practices, authors are encouraged to remind the reader how economic, cultural, organizational, and technical factors influence what will be the best approach for different countries.

The new Special Issue from ACS Chemical Health & Safety could include research articles, case studies, commentaries, letters, reviews, and methods/protocols. Authors and readers are encouraged to review ACS Chemical Health & Safety’s general aims and scope, as well as the accompanying Editorial, as they prepare manuscripts for the August 31, 2025 submission deadline.
