This Special Issue will gather natural disaster management plans and lessons learned for the chemistry community to consider. Submit your manuscript by June 30, 2025.

Icons depicting natural disasters: flood, tornado, drought, wildfire, thunderstorm, and heatwave.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and even wildfires can have a devastating impact on research institutions, causing significant damage to laboratory facilities and disrupting ongoing research activities. Chemists, in particular, face unique challenges in the aftermath of such events, as their work often involves hazardous materials and specialized equipment.

We invite colleagues to contribute submissions to Disaster Resource Management Special Issue in ACS Chemical Health & Safety, and share lessons learned that can help prepare us for future natural disasters or share disaster management plans for the community to consider. In the aftermath of such devastating natural disaster events, it is crucial to implement effective strategies for both psychological resilience and academic resource reconstruction to enable chemists to resume their research endeavors and contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge. More information about the Special Issue can be found in the corresponding Editorial.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaboration, innovation, and preparedness plans for disasters
  • Strategies for psychological resilience and academic resource reconstruction
  • Guidelines to policymakers
  • All types of impacts on colleagues and institutions from extreme weather
  • Responses and recovery post-disaster
The submission deadline for the Special Issue is June 30, 2025.
