This Special Issue will collect high quality contributions in antimicrobial biointerfaces research. Submit your manuscript by June 1, 2026.

Microscopic illustration of rod‑shaped bacteria, representing microbial or antimicrobial research.

In the past few years, advances in antimicrobial and antibiofilm biointerfaces have significantly improved the performance of medical devices and wound dressings by reducing infection rates and enhancing tissue integration. These advances have also accelerated progress in industrial and environmental applications, such as biofouling-resistant surfaces for water systems and food processing equipment, improving safety and lowering maintenance costs.

In 2026, ACS Applied Bio Materials and will publish a Special Issue titled “Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Biointerfaces,” intending to showcase recent advances in the design, synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial materials and biointerfaces for biomedical and related applications.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Antimicrobial and antibiofilm surface chemistries and coatings
  • Biointerface-based strategies to prevent device-associated infections
  • Mechanistic insights into microbe–material interactions
  • Smart, responsive, and multifunctional biomaterials
  • Translational pathways and regulatory considerations
