This Special Issue will showcase how strategic materials design in biofabrication research enables an ever-expanding range of functionalities across diverse living systems. Submit your manuscript by November 30, 2026.

Conceptual scientific illustration of bacteria and glowing particles interacting with a layered surface, alongside a chemical structure diagram.

Biofabrication has historically found major applications in healthcare-focused areas such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. While the field continues to impact and advance these areas, biofabrication research has also rapidly expanded into a much broader range of living systems, finding applications in areas such as non-mammalian cells, bacteria, microalgae, food systems, and engineered living materials.

This Special Issue from ACS Materials Letters will showcase how strategic materials design in biofabrication research enables an ever-expanding range of functionalities across diverse living systems. We welcome materials-focused and forward-thinking contributions that highlight how the study of materials-living system interactions is driving the advancement of biofabrication in both traditional and emerging applications.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Materials design approaches for biofabrication for regenerative medicine purposes
  • Biofabrication of in vitro platforms for modeling physiological and pathological systems
  • Materials and processes for biofabrication in food and alternative protein systems
  • Biofabrication with non-mammalian living systems, including bacteria, microalgae, fungi, and consortia
  • Engineered living materials and hybrid materials–living systems
  • Emerging biofabrication applications beyond healthcare, including environmental and industrial uses

Submit your manuscript by November 30, 2026.
