Women's health remains one of the most important yet historically underexplored areas of biomedical research. Despite significant advances in biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering, many conditions unique to or disproportionately affecting women continue to lack effective therapies, predictive preclinical models, and translational technologies capable of addressing unmet clinical needs.

This Special Issue in ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering will showcase innovative research at the intersection of biomaterials, bioengineering, regenerative medicine, and women's health. The collection aims to highlight emerging materials, devices, engineered tissues, and advanced in vitro platforms that improve our understanding, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of conditions affecting women across the lifespan while accelerating translation from laboratory discoveries to clinical impact.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Biomaterials for tissue replacement and regeneration in women's health
  • Breast reconstruction and soft tissue engineering
  • Pelvic floor repair and regeneration
  • Biomaterials for reproductive and gynecological applications
  • Maternal and fetal health technologies
  • Women's health-related medical devices and implantable systems
  • Drug delivery systems targeting women's health conditions
  • Biomaterials for wound healing following gynecologic or breast surgery
  • Menopause and aging-related tissue regeneration strategies
  • Sex as a biological variable in disorders that disproportionately or differentially affect women
  • Organoids, organ-on-chip models, and advanced in vitro platforms for women's health
  • 3D bioprinting for female-specific tissues and disease models
  • Models of endometriosis, uterine disorders, ovarian disease, and reproductive biology
  • Biomaterials-enabled diagnostics and biosensing platforms
  • Translational and clinical studies advancing women's health technologies

The goal of this Special Issue is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers, biomaterials scientists, clinicians, and translational researchers. By bringing together diverse perspectives and technological innovations, this collection seeks to define future research priorities and accelerate the development of next-generation solutions that improve health outcomes for women worldwide.
