This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest contributions from scientists and technologists in the interdisciplinary area of solid-state and materials chemistry research. Submit your manuscript by January 30, 2026.

In 2026, ACS Applied Energy Materials will publish a Special Issue titled “Solid-State Structural Design for Energy Conversion and Storage,” which will aim to highlight how chemical bonding and solid-state structure can be controlled to design efficient materials for energy conversion and storage.
In the past few years, research has advanced the control of chemical bonding and solid-state structures to design high-performance materials for energy conversion and storage. Innovations include defect engineering in crystalline solids, machine learning-guided materials discovery, electronic structure modulation, phonon engineering, exotic properties of layered heterostructures, new quantum materials and synthesis of new solid-state electrolytes. These breakthroughs have enabled safer batteries, more efficient solar cells, and improved energy density across technologies.
This Special Issue intends to highlight the original scientific contributions in the research areas listed below:
