Water-related infectious diseases cause millions of deaths each year and exact a huge economic burden in the most vulnerable populations of the world. These diseases arise from contaminated drinking water or exposure to pathogenic aquatic organisms. Alternatively, water-related diseases can be spread by insects that breed in stagnant water. In the last decade, significant progress has been made in the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of water-related diseases.
At the ACS Fall 2019 National Meeting in San Diego, CA, a symposium titled “Global Health: Biology and Chemistry of Waterborne Diseases” will be held August 27th at 8:30 A.M. at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Marriott Grand Ballroom Section 6. The event was organized by the Division of Biology Chemistry (BIOL), along with ACS Infectious Diseases Editor-in-Chief Courtney C. Aldrich and Associate Editor Felix Caldéron. The symposium will feature prominent speakers in the field, including Judy Sakanari (University of California, San Francisco), Kim D. Janda (The Scripps Research Institute), Samuel Arnold (University of Washington), Melissa S. Love (California Institute for Biomedical Research), and Upinder Singh. The talks will highlight recent advances in the field on drug discovery, platform development, and diagnostics of several water-related diseases, including cryptosporidiosis, shigellosis, lymphatic filariasis, amebiasis, and onchocerciasis.
The journal will also be welcoming submissions for a Special Issue starting in the fall focusing on gut-related pathogens with Guest Editors Felix Caldéron and Wes van Voorhis that is scheduled for publication in 2021.
The staff of ACS Infectious Diseases hope you will join us for the symposium at the ACS Fall National Meeting and encourage you to consider submitting a manuscript to the accompanying Special Issue topic!
