Natural products research fieldwork: gloved hands sampling wild polypore mushrooms from a tree for laboratory study.

Natural products continue to play a vital role in drug discovery, serving as sources of biologically active compounds, pharmacological tools, and approved therapeutics. Despite their long history of success, significant challenges remain in translating newly discovered natural products into clinically relevant drug candidates. Recent advances in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, drug delivery, structural biology, and artificial intelligence are creating new opportunities to accelerate this journey from discovery to application.

To highlight emerging advances in this area, ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science is pleased to announce our latest Special Issue, Natural Products in Pharmacology and Drug Development. The collection will showcase innovative research that advances our understanding of natural products and their potential as therapeutic agents.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Pharmacology of natural products
  • Molecular mechanisms and targets
  • Drug discovery and lead optimization
  • ADME, safety, and toxicology
  • Drug delivery and formulation
  • Preclinical and translational research
  • AI and computational approaches
  • Bioactive compounds from natural sources

For this Special Issue, we are particularly interested in studies of chemically characterized natural products with clear pharmacological activity, defined mechanisms of action, validated molecular targets, or strong translational potential. Research focused solely on crude extracts, preliminary biological screening, or molecular docking without sufficient experimental validation is generally outside the scope of the collection. Submissions are welcome through April 30, 2027. All articles will be peer reviewed prior to acceptance to ensure they fit the scope of the special issue and meet the high publishing standards of ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science.
