ACS Publications and Southeast University launch a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to supporting innovation in digital medicine and medical engineering under the leadership of its inaugural Editor-in-Chief, Professor Gaolin Liang.

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) and Southeast University are proud to announce the launch of Digital Medical Engineering, a peer-reviewed, open access journal that will publish interdisciplinary research integrating digital technologies, engineering, and healthcare.
The journal will be led by its inaugural Editor-in-Chief, Gaolin Liang, Ph.D., Chair Professor in the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering at Southeast University, China. Professor Liang has a distinguished academic career in the fields of bioimaging and biomedicine.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Southeast University to introduce Digital Medical Engineering, a journal that convenes the community of researchers working at the intersection of digital technologies, engineering, and medicine,” said ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer Sarah Tegen, Ph.D. “Under Professor Liang’s leadership, the journal will serve as a trusted home for researchers pushing the boundaries of how technology can improve human health.”
"Digital medicine is not merely a technological evolution—it is a fundamental reimagining of how we understand, diagnose, and treat disease," said Professor Zhongze Gu, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering at Southeast University. "This journal will provide an essential platform where diverse voices from the lab, the clinic, and the industry can converge, challenge one another, and collectively define the next generation of medical technology. I am thrilled to see Southeast University partnering with ACS in this important endeavor."
Professor Gaolin Liang received his BSc in Physical Chemistry from Nanjing University and his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from Fudan University. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Stanford University. He has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, with his research primarily focused on the development of novel molecular probes, early disease diagnoses, and soft materials (e.g., hydrogels) for therapeutic applications.

“It is a tremendous honor and a significant responsibility to be entrusted as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief for Digital Medical Engineering. This role offers me with a unique opportunity to shape a new platform at the exciting intersection of digital medicine and medical engineering.” said Professor Liang.
“My vision for Digital Medical Engineering is to establish it as a premier, must-read journal that will be the home of transformative research that pushes the boundaries of how digital tools and engineering principles are applied to healthcare. We will strive for rapid publication of high-impact studies, from novel biosensors and medical imaging analyses to AI-driven diagnostics and personalized medicine platforms. Ultimately, we want the journal to reflect the most dynamic and promising advancements that will shape the future of medicine.”
The new journal will begin accepting submissions in mid-2026 and will publish its first issue in late 2026. It will feature original, peer-reviewed research in the form of articles, letters, reviews, perspectives, tutorials, and technical notes, as well as diverse editorial materials, including editorials and viewpoints.
Digital Medical Engineering will also offer introductory no-charge open access publication. Article publishing charges (APCs) will be automatically waived for all manuscripts submitted by December 31, 2028.
