Advances in nanotechnology have empowered the design of drugs and drug carriers that can cross different biological barriers and target specific diseased sites. Cancer represents an important player when it comes to the biomedical applications of nanotechnology.
In the past two decades, cancer nanomedicine has evolved from an emerging area of research to a more mature one, an observation cited by the U.S. National Cancer Institute in its recent decision to halt funding for the Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (Service RF, Science, 2019). For diseases other than cancer, however, opportunities for innovating new nanomedicines remain ample, partially because our understanding of the interactions between bionanomaterials and these associated biological barriers are still infrequently investigated.
Molecular Pharmaceutics invites you to contribute an original research article in an upcoming Special Issue of the journal. The Special Issue will cover emerging design concepts and applications of nanotechnology in non-cancer related areas, hopefully providing a forum for sharing potential approaches to overcoming biological barriers. All non-cancer related topics will be considered, with emphasis on the following topics:
