In this interview, Prof. Chen shares his vision for the journal, his passion for research, and his thoughts on how young researchers might approach their careers.

Prof. Xiaoyuan (Shawn) Chen, from the National University of Singapore, is founding Editor-in-Chief of ACS Nano Medicine, a new journal which is now open for submissions. In this interview, he shares his vision for the journal, his passion for research, and his thoughts on how young researchers might approach their careers.

What does it mean to you to be the founding Editor of ACS Nano Medicine?
Being the founding Editor of ACS Nano Medicine is both a great honor and a strategic opportunity to establish a leading journal in nanomedicine. Given the rapid growth and immense potential of nanomedicine in both basic research and its applications, I believe ACS Nano Medicine is essential not only as a platform for researchers to publish their latest discoveries but also as a trusted resource that facilitates the translation of scientific breakthroughs into clinical practice and technological innovation. I am deeply honored to serve in this capacity and will dedicate myself to advancing the field of nanomedicine by fostering the connection between scientific discoveries and their real-world clinical applications.
What is your vision for the journal to impact the field of nanomedicine?
My vision for ACS Nano Medicine is to establish it as a premier scholarly platform dedicated to the equitable and timely dissemination of high-quality research, while promoting innovation and collaboration across fields. The journal will focus on interdisciplinary advances in the fields of nanobiomaterials, nanotheranostics, nanorobotics, nanodevices, genetic and tissue engineering, as well as clinical translation and commercialization. Supported by the strong reputation and extensive community network of ACS, I anticipate the journal to evolve into the leading platform for publishing groundbreaking scientific discoveries and technological innovations in the field of nanomedicine.
Why should researchers in the field consider submitting their next best manuscript to the journal?
ACS Nano Medicine will provide a high-impact platform for publishing cutting-edge research in nanomedicine, backed by the strong reputation and credibility of ACS. Publishing in this journal reflects recognition from leading international experts and helps increase both the academic influence and global visibility of the research. The journal prioritizes highly original studies with significant scientific value and strong potential for clinical translation, offering a fast-track publication pathway to ensure timely communication of major discoveries. With extensive dissemination network and academic outreach resources of ACS, published work will gain broad exposure and high citation potential. More than just a mark of recognition, ACS Nano Medicine will be a key forum for researchers to engage with the global scientific community and contribute to the translation of research into real-world applications.
What are you looking for in the manuscripts you receive?
We seek original and innovative research with significant scientific and clinical impact, emphasizing a multidisciplinary perspective. Given the highly competitive landscape of nanomedicine journals, we will prioritize submissions that introduce new advancements in the field, whether through technological innovations, novel therapeutic approaches, or fundamental discoveries with the potential to shape future clinical applications. We particularly value high-quality studies that drive progress in nanomedicine from basic research to clinical translation.
What excites you about your current research?
My research spans various aspects of nanomedicine, including molecular imaging, nanotheranostics, and gene therapy. One of the most exciting areas is the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals that enhance cancer diagnosis and treatment, some of which have already progressed from the laboratory to advanced clinical trials and hold the potential to transform patient care. The rapid advancements in translational nanomedicine continue to drive my passion, as each new discovery brings us closer to more effective and personalized therapies, ultimately improving future treatment outcomes.
What advice would you give to young researchers entering the field of nanomedicine and nanotechnology today?
Stay curious, embrace interdisciplinary collaboration, and pay close attention to translational impact. Nanomedicine is a rapidly evolving field that integrates chemistry, biology, engineering, and medicine. Young researchers should build a strong foundation in both fundamental science and real-world clinical needs, rather than chasing quick or superficial results. Being open to new technologies and staying persistent through challenges are crucial. Breakthroughs often come from unexpected places, and those who think outside the box are usually the ones who drive the next big advances.
What about your life outside of research—how do you wind down and relax?
I enjoy hiking, playing badminton, and engaging in activities that keep me physically active. Exercise not only promotes health but also enhances mental clarity and creativity. Despite my busy schedule, I believe that taking breaks and staying active are essential for sustaining long-term productivity and innovation.
