ACS Publications is committed to celebrating diversity in the chemical sciences. From our editors and authors to early-career researchers and industrial chemists, we recognize the broad impact women in science have on chemistry and the related sciences. Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry (EWOC) is an annual conference that began last year at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to empower all marginalized individuals by promoting equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion across all chemistry fields. ACS Publications has supported the EWOC since Margaret Faul, an Associate Editor for Organic Letters, and Donna Huryn, an Associate Editor for ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters, co-founded it in 2019. This year, ACS journals central to organic chemistry* will participate in and sponsor the EWOC virtual conference from June 24-June 25.

Highlights from ACS Publications’ 2021 Gender Diversity Initiatives

Here are some highlights from the many initiatives that we have already completed this year that show our commitment to celebrating women in science year-round.

  • C&EN’s Amazing Women of Chemistry: a compilation of interviews, profiles, and career snapshots of women in molecular sciences.
  • Gender Diversity in Process Chemistry” Editorial: this editorial provides an update on the progress made since it was originally published in 2019. The update provides an action plan that identifies six categories to progress gender diversity in the process chemistry community. The OPR&D editorial is authored by two EWOC Founders, Rebecca T. Ruck and Margaret M. Faul.
  • “Women in Process Chemistry” Special Issue: this special issue of OPR&D features a collection of papers published by women in process chemistry. Such innovative work encompasses a multitude of topics relevant for the safe, environmentally benign, and ultimately economical manufacturing of organic compounds.
  • ”Women at the Forefront of Chemistry” Special Issue: a collection of articles showcasing the women researchers who have published new advances from their groups in ACS Omega.
  • Professor Marisa C. Kozlowski, who was named Editor-in-Chief of Organic Letters this year after serving as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Organic Chemistry, Professor Kozlowski is heavily involved in initiatives that support women in organic chemistry. On International Women’s Day (May 8) this year, she launched a website and database of female organic chemists.
  • Professor Christa E. Müller started work as the new Editor-in-Chief of ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science on April 1. She recommends early-career scientists in the field “Look for mentors, build your network, be open and always talk to people, collaborate with great scientists, and enjoy your work.”
