Professor Gregory V. Hartland, of the University of Notre Dame, will lead the journal starting on January 1, 2027.

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) is pleased to announce that Professor Gregory V. Hartland of the University of Notre Dame, USA, has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters (JPC Letters).
JPC Letters reports new and original experimental and theoretical research of interest to physical chemists, biophysical chemists, chemical physicists, physicists, material scientists, and engineers. A key feature of the journal is its focus on rapid publication of significant scientific advances and physical insights.
"Physical chemistry is a very broad and dynamic area of research, and The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters is the premier journal for publishing high impact papers in this field,” said Professor Hartland. “I am very excited to be the Editor-in-Chief of this journal and to be part of the community of researchers working at the forefront of physical chemistry — in all its forms!"
Professor Hartland will begin his tenure as Editor-in-Chief of JPC Letters on January 1, 2027, building upon the leadership of his predecessor, Professor Gregory D. Scholes, who served as Deputy Editor of JPC Letters from 2016-2019 and then Editor-in-Chief from 2020-2026. Scholes is the William F. Tod Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University.
“We are delighted to welcome Professor Hartland as the next Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters,” said ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer Sarah Tegen, Ph.D. “His research in physical chemistry and longstanding editorial service with ACS bring valuable perspective to this role. We look forward to working with him to ensure that the journal continues to be a trusted home for significant advances and new physical insights.”
An ACS Fellow since 2011, Professor Hartland received the 2021 Award in Experimental Physical Chemistry from the ACS Physical Chemistry Division. He served as a Senior Editor for The Journal of Physical Chemistry from 2009 to June 2020 and has served as Deputy Editor of The Journal of Physical Chemistry C since June 2020.
Professor Hartland's research examines ultrafast processes in nanomaterials using optical spectroscopy. His current research interests include investigation of how nanomaterials exchange energy with their environment, the coupling between plasmons in metal nanostructures, and the resonances of molecular or semiconductor systems.
