Photon Science is accepting submissions and will publish scientific research and technical innovations based on photon, electron, and neutron facilities. APCs are waived for papers accepted after peer review until December 2027.

Transparent spheres with glowing cores hover over a grid surface, connected by light patterns against a dark background.

Photon Science, the new open access journal co-published by ACS Publications and ShanghaiTech University, is now accepting manuscript submissions.

Under the leadership of inaugural Editor-in-Chief Dr. Wanli Yang, Senior Staff Scientist in the Advanced Light Source division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, the journal looks forward to publishing cutting-edge studies of chemical transformation and energy materials based on photon, electron, and neutron facilities. The journal will also report breakthroughs in instrumentation, methodology, and big-data research with the potential for advancing chemistry and materials science.

Dr. Hendrik Bluhm from the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Germany, Dr. Laura Foglia from Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy, and Dr. Hua Zhou from Argonne National Laboratory, USA have been appointed as associate editors of Photon Science. Together with the EiC, they will work to enhance the journal's influence and prominence, advancing its role as a leading publication in the field.

The new journal will publish original, peer-reviewed research in the form of articles, communications, reviews, perspectives, and methods/protocols, and diverse editorial materials including editorials and commentaries.

Article publishing charges (APCs) will be automatically waived for all articles submitted by December 31, 2027, if they are accepted following the robust peer review expected of every ACS Publications journal.

Photon Science welcomes submissions on topics such as, but not limited to:

  • Chemical and material science based on modern particle facilities including synchrotron radiation, free-electron laser, high-power ultrafast laser, electron, and neutron sources.
  • Fundamental photon science for understanding photon-matter, electron-matter, and neutron-matter interactions for studying structural, chemical, and physical properties in both experimental and theoretical disciplines.
  • Energy research based on photon science, including catalysis, batteries, fuel cells, and photovoltaics.
  • Technological material research based on photon science, including lithography, semiconductors, magnetic, multiferroic, organic, and extreme-condition materials.
  • Life science research based on photon science, including structures of subcellular structures, living cells and tissues, as well as their interactions and functions.
  • Materials and devices for photon science applications, including photonics, plasmonics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, optoelectronics, detectors, and sensors.
  • Instrumentation developments, demonstrations, and milestones of large photon, electron, and neutron science facilities.
  • Methodology for processing and analyzing photon science data, including real-time big data processing, database, autonomous experiments, theoretical calculations, computing simulations, and machine learning algorithms.
