The circular economy refers to a systemic approach to designing, producing, using, and disposing of polymers in a way that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency. With a global shift towards safer, bio-based, biodegradable, or recyclable alternatives, this Special Issue seeks to collate biopolymer researchers’ efforts towards this end.

We are pleased to invite you to submit your original research articles to Biomacromolecules. Submissions should be focused on sustainable resource use, end-of-life management, design for circularity, and methods for reducing pollution or carbon footprint in polymer production.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Circularity in biopolymer design
  • Upcycling of petroleum-based polymers & biodegradable polymers
  • Bio-based monomers sourced from biomass, biomass waste (e.g. waste vegetable oils), & CO2
  • Chemical, enzymatic, and hybrid approaches to polymer recycling
  • Biodegradation pathways
  • Environmental fate of biopolymers
  • Functional biopolymers from circular feedstocks
  • Biological engineering for polymer metabolism
