This collaborative Special Issue will focus on the design, synthesis, characterization, mechanics, and advanced applications of ionogels. Submit your manuscript by November 30, 2025.

Abstract, flowing fabric in shades of blue and purple, creating a dynamic and fluid visual effect against a dark background.

Ionogels, which are polymer networks swollen with ionic liquids, have garnered increased attention as mechanically robust, highly conductive, and chemically stable soft materials. Their unique combination of ionic conductivity, thermal stability, possibility for mechanical toughness distinguishes them from conventional polymer networks and hydrogels. These properties, in turn, open a broad spectrum of potential applications, ranging from wearable electronics and energy storage to soft robotics and biomaterials. Despite these exciting prospects, several scientific and engineering challenges remain, making this the perfect time for a dedicated Special Issue focused on the challenges and emerging opportunities in ionogel research.

The ACS Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) and ACS Publications are collaborating on a Special Issue focused on the design, synthesis, characterization, mechanics, and advanced applications of ionogels. Submissions are welcomed through November 30, 2025.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Synthesis and Preparation of Ionogels
  • Fundamental Structure–Property Relationships
  • Advanced Processing and Fabrication
  • Emerging Applications
  • Environmental and Sustainability Aspects of Ionogels
  • Design, Mechanics, and Novel Applications
