The journal cover art program "Many Voices of Science" is a new initiative by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Publications Division aimed at celebrating and representing how scientists from diverse upbringings, cultures, perspectives, and experiences thrive. This program is open to all scientists irrespective of their background and aligns with the ACS Strategic Plan 2025-2029, which emphasizes the importance of Inclusion and Belonging in advancing scientific knowledge and fostering a global community.

Program Details

Submission Process: Scientists are welcome to submit their artwork and an Editorial (500-900 words), which should reflect the themes of scientific discovery, innovation, and the transformative power of chemistry.

  • The artwork should showcase the positive impact of science on society through visually compelling and thought-provoking cover art.*
  • The Editorial should provide context behind the meaning of the cover art and its relation to chemistry. We highly encourage including details on the inspiration behind the cover image, such as, but not limited to, the author’s journey to becoming a scientist, challenges and experiences that have shaped their outlook, and/or stories of mentors who have had a profound effect on their scientific journey.
  • Authors are welcome to suggest up to 3 journals for submission consideration and are encouraged to include a rationale behind their selections.

Selection Criteria: Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity, relevance to the ACS mission, and the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in an accessible and engaging manner.

Publication: Selected artworks will each be featured on the cover of an ACS journal, accompanied by the Editorial, written by the submitting scientist.

Recognition: Up to 12 covers will be published annually across the ACS Publications portfolio.

*Generative AI or other assisted technologies cannot be used for the creation of artwork for this cover art program.

We are now accepting submissions through September 30, 2025.
