It only seemed like we just left San Francisco and now we are gearing up for the next ACS National Meeting in Washington, DC. From August 20-24, presentations will be given covering every aspect of chemistry from analytical, to polymers, chemical information, and even law.
These are the sessions I have at the top of my list and I recommend them for librarians and information professionals:
***
Marriott Marquis Washington DC, Liberty Ballroom Salon M
PRES Science Communications: The Art of Developing a Clear Message
Science is incredibly valuable to the greater good, but learning to talk about science is a challenge. I am looking forward to attending this symposium to hear more about developing a clear message about science.
***
Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel, Farragut Square/Lafayette Park
CINF Scholarships for Scientific Advancement: Student Poster Competition
See the latest student research in chemical information and cheminformatics at this reception and poster session. Scholarships sponsored by ACS Publications.
***
Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Room 146C
MPPG: 2017 C&EN Talented 12
Hear TED-style talks from the C&EN Talented 12. They are all young researchers using chemistry to solve global problems. The Talented 12 are chosen by the editors of C&EN after reviewing hundreds of nominations.
***
Washington Marriott at Metro Center, Junior Ballroom 2
CINF Collaborating for Success: Professional Skills Development for Undergraduates, Graduates & Post-Docs
It is crucial to prepare students and post-docs for life after the classroom, the degree, and fellowships. What professional skills are important for all students and post-docs to learn? This full-day symposium should help start the discussion to bring together the various programs, classes, and workshops that are being offered between libraries, publishers, faculty, etc.
***
CINF Government(-Funded) Chemical Databases & Open Chemistry
There are so many free resources funded and/or developed using government resources. This two-day symposium should help provide insight into all of these different platforms, their strengths, weaknesses, and any future developments for them.
***
Washington Marriott at Metro Center, Junior Ballroom 2
CINF Why Open Data? Effective Use Cases & Exemplars for Open Data & Citizen Science
Open data has been a cornerstone of the open access movement. In order to help advance research, it makes sense to openly provide data from previous research. Citizen science has been a major growth area in recent years. It will be great to hear the cases presented in the symposium where these two intersect and their impact on the greater community.
