The fields of agriculture and food science have enjoyed exciting breakthroughs in recent years. These advances have not only impacted benchwork but have had a practical effect on food production and environmental management. Even so, new contaminants threaten public safety and health.

As industry researchers, they must keep up to date on new techniques and emerging threats. Two Special Issues of ACS Publications journals offer key insights to spark discussion, set goals, and develop solutions to safeguard food safety.

Recent Advances and Applications of Immunochemical Techniques in Agriculture and Food Science

Immunochemical assays are an integral part of industrial quality control. This special issue discusses how polyclonal and monoclonal antibody-based assays and antibody-mediated modulation work efficiently and effectively to identify allergens and drugs in food products.

Jiao et al. harness a lateral flow immunochromatographic assay to quickly and accurately identify a common shellfish allergen in 21 commercially available foods. Li et al.’s monoclonal antibodies pinpoint with high affinity and broad specificity the presence of flunixin, a common nonsteroidal drug, in animal products. Meanwhile, Ji et al.’s comprehensive overview of immunoassay developments shows how we can meet increasing screening demands for the build-up of marine biotoxins in our food supply.

Emerging Contaminants in Agroecosystems

Although agricultural and food science researchers have been screening for contaminants in our food and water supplies for decades, emerging contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS or forever chemicals), microplastics, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present new threats. This special issue discusses these threats to food safety and environmental health, along with strategies and solutions to address them.

Explore the use of biochar to mitigate the PFAS-related threat of biosolid fertilizer in Holly et al. Read compelling evidence that pesticides have introduced PFAS into the drinking water of Black and Hispanic Californian communities in Libenson et al. Grasp the importance of untargeted contaminant analysis for drinking water safety after Nanusha et al.’s untargeted analysis of 81 Danish drinking water sites identified 121 micropollutants.

Other articles (Tarigholizadeh et al. and Bryant et al. discuss the contamination of PAHs and nano- and microplastics in vegetable produce.
