The fields of agricultural chemistry, environmental chemistry, and geochemistry address challenges in areas including alternative energy, green chemistry and sustainability, biomass, remediation, and human health. As a primer to the exciting research that will be presented at Pacifichem, we’ve compiled a collection of articles, from across the ACS portfolio, that highlights the broad scope of issues affecting these fields. The publications describe advances in understanding potential contributors to acute water toxicity in oil sands process-affected water, the effectiveness of ferric chloride to pretreat biomass, the need to carefully analyze lignin fractions and classify them based on desired physical and chemical attributes, the influence of macromolecular structure on the hydrolytic stability of ascorbic acid supported in pectin films, and the discovery that pectin nanostructure can be altered through enzymatic engineering to produce tailored structural and functional properties. We hope you enjoy this collection of articles and it provides inspiration for future research and discovery.
