This multi-journal Special Issue will analyze the interplay between material properties and large-scale system requirements, ensuring that innovations in batteries, thermal storage, and other energy storage technologies are designed with real-world performance in mind. Submit your manuscript by August 31, 2025.

Three futuristic batteries filled with green material, glowing with a digital interface, set against a gradient background.

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, ACS Omega, and ACS Applied Energy Materials join efforts to highlight research that explores the development of energy storage materials and technologies with a strong focus on their operating conditions and constraints at relevant scales, such as grid-level storage. While many energy storage innovations demonstrate promise at the laboratory scale, their practical implementation is often limited by factors such as charge/discharge rates, thermal management, cycle life, and economic feasibility.

We invite contributions that analyze the interplay between material properties and large-scale system requirements, ensuring that innovations in batteries, thermal storage, and other energy storage technologies are designed with real-world performance in mind. Manuscripts should emphasize how factors such as scalability, efficiency, and durability impact the viability of storage solutions across different applications, from portable electronics to grid-scale energy storage. The overarching goal is to highlight strategies for designing energy storage solutions that are not only high-performing at the material level but also optimized for industrial and grid-scale applications.

Topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Multi-Scale Energy Storage Design
    • Strategies for integrating material-level advancements with large-scale system requirements
    • Case studies on successful scale-up of energy storage technologies
  • Modeling and Simulation for Energy Storage Optimization
    • Computational approaches for predicting performance at different scales
    • System-level modeling of storage integration with energy networks
  • Charge/Discharge Performance and System Constraints
    • Optimization of charge/discharge cycle speeds for different applications
    • Balancing energy density, power density, and long-term stability
  • Thermal Management in Energy Storage Systems
    • Advances in cooling and heat dissipation strategies for large-scale storage
    • Thermal control challenges in high-capacity and fast-cycling storage solutions
  • Scalability and Economic Feasibility
    • Techno-economic analyses of different storage technologies at scale
    • Life-cycle cost assessments and sustainability considerations
  • Grid-Level and Industrial Energy Storage
    • Integration of energy storage systems with power grids and renewable energy sources
    • Large-scale storage technologies for demand-side management and load balancing
  • Advancements in Batteries, Thermal Storage, and Alternative Technologies
    • New materials and chemistries for batteries, including solid-state and flow batteries, Innovations in thermal energy storage for industrial and grid applications
    • Emerging energy storage concepts beyond conventional battery technologies

We welcome contributions that address these themes with a focus on bridging the gap between material development and real-world operational performance, ensuring energy storage technologies meet the demands of large-scale deployment.

The submission deadline is August 31, 2025.
