ACS Applied Engineering Materials invites submissions for a Special Issue focusing on recent advances and prospects in the field of active colloids, with a particular emphasis on their potential for autonomous applications.

Active colloids, small-scale materials capable of enhanced motion within fluid environments, have garnered significant interest and witnessed rapid growth over the past decade. As the field evolves, the realization of viable applications is becoming increasingly feasible, promising transformative impacts across various domains in chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering.

This Special Issue aims to gather top-quality contributions on recent developments in active colloids, with a focus on advancements that facilitate autonomous functionalities. We seek contributions that explore novel approaches, experimental findings, and practical implementations with special emphasis on the development of materials in the following areas:

  • Design and synthesis of active colloids for autonomous operation
  • Control mechanisms enabling autonomous behavior in colloidal systems
  • Integration of active colloids into practical applications without external interventions
  • Strategies for addressing challenges related to guidance, solution compatibilities, manufacture, and functionality
  • Recent developments in environmental remediation utilizing autonomous active colloids
  • Applications of active colloids in lab-on-a-chip microfluidics for autonomous analysis and manipulation
  • Progress towards autonomous in vivo drug delivery using active colloids
