This Special Issue will highlight ongoing advances in understanding the crystallographic and structural behavior of battery materials as a critical component in advancing energy storage technologies. Submit your manuscript by October 31, 2026.

Illustration of a crystalline battery material surrounded by hydrogen ions and electrical effects.

Understanding the crystallographic and structural behavior of battery materials has emerged as a critical component in advancing energy storage technologies. With the increasing demand for batteries with higher performance, safety, and sustainability, crystal structure design, defect engineering, and phase evolution analysis are playing an increasingly central role in battery development.

To address this evolving field, we are organizing a Special Issue in Crystal Growth & Design to showcase the latest advances in the structure–property relationship of battery materials. This Special Issue aims to highlight cutting-edge experimental and theoretical insights into the role of crystallographic structure in charge storage, transport mechanisms, stability, and reversibility in battery systems. We hope this collection will serve as a timely platform for disseminating impactful research and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between crystallographers, chemists, and energy scientists.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrode Crystal Structures Phase Transitions
  • Metastable Structures
  • In Situ Characterization
  • Operando Techniques
  • Defect Chemistry
  • Ion Transport Pathways
  • Interfacial Structures
  • Solid-Solid Interfaces
  • Solid-Liquid Interfaces
  • Structural Degradation
  • Failure Mechanisms
  • Self-Healing Behavior
  • Crystal Engineering Strategies
  • Solid-State Batteries
  • First-Principles Modelling
  • Molecular Dynamics Simulations
