This marks a new step for Brazilian scientists enrolled in industry-driven research to publish their latest discoveries open access, connecting fundamental and applied research within the community.
For the last few years, ACS read and publish agreements in Latin America have made important progress in efforts to grow and facilitate open access publishing for authors in the region. Notably, our historic agreement with CAPES consortium in Brazil has covered thousands of eligible authors at more than 300 institutions. Since then, several discussions have been initiated around funding options and how to guarantee that scientists in these countries can feasibly publish more OA research and keep up with the pace of the global Open Science landscape. This applies not only to academic stakeholders, but also to people associated with governmental and industry-related research.
As a result of this, ACS Publications has recently completed a read and publish agreement with SENAI Innovation Institution in Electrochemistry, the first agreement of this type in Brazil. The institution is under the Brazilian National Industry Confederation (CNI), a major non-profit stakeholder that represents and defends the interests of the national industry at both the state and federal government levels, aiming to generate new technologies through the SENAI Innovation Institutions ecosystem. These institutions perform innovative and solutions-oriented research to help Brazilian and global corporations address their challenges and develop new products and processes, in addition to being more sustainable and effective. The SENAI Innovation Institution in Electrochemistry—located in Curitiba, capital of the state of Paraná—is focused on energy research, new and efficient batteries and fuel cells, sensors for diagnostics and industrial bioprocesses, and smart coatings and materials, among other endeavors.
This agreement not only opens a new door to expand open access publishing opportunities in Latin America for researchers that work in the government and industry-related sectors, but it also helps bridge fundamental and applied research. A remarkable Perspective article from Journal of Medicinal Chemistry highlights the importance of researchers that conduct industry-driven research to share their results within scientific papers. These publications can help scientists understand how applied and innovation-focused research are conducted, identify topics that may be of interest to researchers in various industries, recognize gaps and new opportunities, boost visibility for R&D work, and facilitate connections among people within and outside of academia to collaborate and advance scientific knowledge.
This transition from fully traditional publishing to open access affects researchers in all science spheres, and ACS Publications is willing to support authors to deliver their discoveries for a broader audience in our high-impact journals while guarantying top-quality content.
