Brazil’s chemical research community is entering a new era of global visibility; one built on decades of investment in scientific infrastructure, a strong commitment to equitable access, and a growing culture of open science. To celebrate, ACS Omega is proud to launch a collection of Special Issues dedicated to chemistry in Brazil, showcasing the depth, diversity, and geographic reach of research across the country.

Brazil’s scale and scientific potential are exceptional. Home to extraordinary biodiversity, world‑leading renewable energy initiatives, and vast mineral resources, the country plays a critical role in scientific advancement in topics ranging from natural products and medicinal chemistry to materials science, agrochemistry, and sustainability. Over the past 75 years, national initiatives led by organizations such as CNPq, CAPES, and the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) have helped transform this potential into a vibrant, internationally engaged research ecosystem.

A cornerstone of this progress has been equitable access to scientific knowledge. The CAPES Portal de Periódicos has ensured that researchers across Brazil can participate fully in the global scientific dialogue. This vision has now been reinforced through a landmark five‑year institutional open access agreement between CAPES and ACS Publications, allowing researchers at participating institutions to publish open access in ACS journals without publication charges.

The impact has been immediate. The response to the first ACS Omega Special Issue focused on Brazil was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, reflecting both the productivity and the geographic breadth of the community. To best capture this richness, the contributions have been organized into nine thematic Special Issues, each highlighting areas of strength and emerging priorities. The Special Issues are accompanied by an Editorial featuring an interview with Prof. Rossimiriam Pereira de Freitas, President of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ).
